I just bought a 1997 GTI for my wife. The guy said it started one day, then didn't. Then it sat for a year or so. Here's what I have done... the first thing I noticed is that it did not have a start/stop switch. **Question 1- Do I have to buy the exact switch or can i just purchase a general switch from autozone and fabricate it in there? Im on quite the budget** So then I started to check out all the wiring. Repaired some chaffage from the fuel gauge. I put in a spring loaded switch in place of the start/stop, just for the time being. I wanted to see if it would even turn over. The battery is good and I just put it on a 12 hour trickle charge. I installed the battery and put in all new fuses. I put the lanyard on the post and i get nothing. I get no beeps. Again, new to PWC, kind of confused. I think at this point I was supposed to get a beep. So to bypass this problem and to figure out if the darn thing would even try to turn over, I bypassed the solenoid and sure enough, the started spun and the crank moved about a half a turn. Thought it was a good sign... **second question... why no beeps??** "third question... is my solenoid bad??" **forth question-- what else can i look out for and double check??** oh and just to get a few laughs, the first day that I opened up the back seat, I had a little buddy staring me in the face... it was a 3 foot water moccassin. I of course screamed like a 3 year old and told my wife theres a snake in her jetski.... giggity. any idea will help... thanks!!!!!

With it sit'n out, for so long, the landyard and/or post, is dirty/needs replaced. Try an eraser, and and see what happens.

1/4 turn aint great, i'd pour some ATF/PB Blaster, down plug holes, let sit for day, then with plugs removed, jump the relay/turn the pto, located under the grey shield.
