I just bought a 1997 GTI that had sat for a while. I used it one weekend (on old gas, I didn't know how old until I asked the PO and he said about 18 months), and it worked well several hours but then started bogging down on full acceleration. I poked around the forum a bit and decided to change the old fuel lines and clean the fuel selector.
I got the fuel lines replaced but I could not get the selector off. From what I can gather, you need to take off the plastic switch and then undo a 32 mm nut. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the switch off. After mangling it pretty good try to pry (with screwdriver) and pull (with vice grips), I just gave up. It runs fine in the reserve position, but still bogs when in the on position.
Its probably stupid easy but I'm at loss.
