I just bought a 1997 GTI that had sat for a while. I used it one weekend (on old gas, I didn't know how old until I asked the PO and he said about 18 months), and it worked well several hours but then started bogging down on full acceleration. I poked around the forum a bit and decided to change the old fuel lines and clean the fuel selector.

I got the fuel lines replaced but I could not get the selector off. From what I can gather, you need to take off the plastic switch and then undo a 32 mm nut. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the switch off. After mangling it pretty good try to pry (with screwdriver) and pull (with vice grips), I just gave up. It runs fine in the reserve position, but still bogs when in the on position.

Its probably stupid easy but I'm at loss.

In the middle of the switch is a removable rubber insert. Take a small screw driver and pry it out of the switch. Under the insert is a small screw that you take out, then the switch will slide off the post. You might have to give it a bit of a tug.

kicker is spot on,, and sometimes they get really really stuck, so if you have to use pliers and a rag (to protect it) and tug pretty dam hard.
if you mangle it, a used replacement is only $10 anyway, i have a couple.

Thanks so much. I did NOT see a rubber insert, but now I know wehre to look. I must have misunderstood when the thread I read said to pry it out, I thought the whole thing.

Now that I can get it off, do you recommend replacing it or is it pretty easy to clean. If cleaning is an option, what the best method?

Wow, you guys are amazingly fast. This is by far the most responsive forum I have ever been on (joined today).

Thanks for the replies.

from another thread, here's a pic of the selector in aluminum, makes the knob easier to spot... but yours will be the same, just all black, but same little insert.

most people say to replace it, because you can replace it (the selector itself) very cheaply with new.
