Hi guys,
Hope you are all doing well, it's been a while since I've posted. Took my machines out last weekend and didn't do my usual talk with some friends new to the sport before they took off on my gsx. (Something like, follow water traffic laws and for the love of god, don't turn it over!)
Anyway, they turned it over in a wakeless zone and didn't know to flip it back according to the sticker on back and water got into the engine and about 1/4 way up (just above the starter) in the engine bay. I got back from my ride and they gave me the scoop, so first thing I did was crank on it to get it running and blown out in hopes of saving the engine. After about 15 mins of crank / fire repeat, I finally got it to barely stay idling and rode it for about two hours gradually getting the rpm to come up. As I was able to get it above 3000 rpm or so, it started backfiring really bad, I kept riding it because I wanted to get all the water burned out before the engine rusts. Finally after about 1.5 hours it would do full throttle and ran great. Then after taking it back and sitting for a bit, an intermittent backfire issue returns, runs like crap for a few mins, comes out of it, back again, etc.
My question is this; during the process, my LCD gauge was showing random things on the screen such as the right fuel bars showing and left ones not, half the clock showing, etc. th gauge would also stay on after pulling the key out, even though the mpem must be off because it would act normal and not start without the key. After a while the gauge just quit all together but the ski starts and intermittently runs fine. So, would your guess be that my LCD gauge got wet and ruined and I also have some sort of electrical issue with the stator (maybe it's wet too?) or would these issues be related? (I am guessing so)
Is there anything I can check next to determine if the mpem is bad or LCD is bad? Whatever is wrong with it, it's obviously because something shorted out and/or got wet, I just am not sure which it is. It's been running flawlessly for years. I'm also going to try a rectifier test, but I'm not sure that's it if the backfiring happens also at low rpm when load is applied to the engine. I have a feeling that water may have got into the front cover and is shorting the stator. Still not sure what's causing the LCD issue though or why that might affect it.
Sorry for the lengthy post, thanks for any advice.
