Hi guys,

Hope you are all doing well, it's been a while since I've posted. Took my machines out last weekend and didn't do my usual talk with some friends new to the sport before they took off on my gsx. (Something like, follow water traffic laws and for the love of god, don't turn it over!)

Anyway, they turned it over in a wakeless zone and didn't know to flip it back according to the sticker on back and water got into the engine and about 1/4 way up (just above the starter) in the engine bay. I got back from my ride and they gave me the scoop, so first thing I did was crank on it to get it running and blown out in hopes of saving the engine. After about 15 mins of crank / fire repeat, I finally got it to barely stay idling and rode it for about two hours gradually getting the rpm to come up. As I was able to get it above 3000 rpm or so, it started backfiring really bad, I kept riding it because I wanted to get all the water burned out before the engine rusts. Finally after about 1.5 hours it would do full throttle and ran great. Then after taking it back and sitting for a bit, an intermittent backfire issue returns, runs like crap for a few mins, comes out of it, back again, etc.

My question is this; during the process, my LCD gauge was showing random things on the screen such as the right fuel bars showing and left ones not, half the clock showing, etc. th gauge would also stay on after pulling the key out, even though the mpem must be off because it would act normal and not start without the key. After a while the gauge just quit all together but the ski starts and intermittently runs fine. So, would your guess be that my LCD gauge got wet and ruined and I also have some sort of electrical issue with the stator (maybe it's wet too?) or would these issues be related? (I am guessing so)

Is there anything I can check next to determine if the mpem is bad or LCD is bad? Whatever is wrong with it, it's obviously because something shorted out and/or got wet, I just am not sure which it is. It's been running flawlessly for years. I'm also going to try a rectifier test, but I'm not sure that's it if the backfiring happens also at low rpm when load is applied to the engine. I have a feeling that water may have got into the front cover and is shorting the stator. Still not sure what's causing the LCD issue though or why that might affect it.

Sorry for the lengthy post, thanks for any advice.

Check the electrical box. Water gets in but can't get out easy. Causes issues when this happens.

So for the gauge, I checked it again tonight and I'm pretty sure it has water in it. The read light looks pretty foggy when I shine a flashlight in there, didn't see that in the day. Still tracking down the backfire, let me know if you have any tips.

I had my 96 GTX ski turn over twice in the past couple of weeks but my situation wasnt as bad as yours as my engine engine didnt get full of water. I was able to start it immediately and dry it out.

A couple of things did occur with mine after the tip overs that might be happening with yours.....they are easy to check but Im not sure if its the solution to your "backfire".

My water seperator/filter was full of water and caused the engine to missfire (water in the gas) as I was on the lake after my second tip over. I had to empty the water seperator.

My fuel tank vent line that runs to the outside of the hull through a small orifice was clogged with fuel from the tip over. This caused excessive pressure in the fuel delivery lines and caused the engine to run very rich (needle and seat popped off as soon as they got pressure). I figured this out by removing the gas cap and there was a huge relief of pressure from the fuel tank. So, I had to blow out the fuel tank vent line with compressed air.

After my first tip over, all my gauges quit and I just left the ski outside in the hot sun for a few days, they dried out and returned to functioning fortuantely.

Other easy things to check, did water make it into your spark plug boots? Is there water in the rear electrical box near the coil etc.

I guess like you said, a removal of the front cover to check for water in the mag pickup area or rust on the stator hub might be a next step.

For the info gauge you can remove the plastic lens cover to dry it out...its a process to remove the cover though as its held on by a metal ring that has to be cut off. There is some info on this forum on how to do it and then reseal the cover with silicone.

Well, replaced the gauge (scored one from minnetonka4me) and spark plugs and took her for a test run and after a small hiccup after launching, she ran great the rest of the day! Bad plugs seemed to be causing the coughing. Anyway, thanks for the tips!

I rolled my 1997 gtx today in heavy surf. It was so rough that the back seat came off in the flip. I was able to right the ski quickly fighting the surf. No kidding when I was putting the drain plugs in prior to putting the ski in I looked at the roll over decal.
I'm glad I did. The ski started right up and never missed a beat. It must be that PWC quicksilver oil I use that made all the diff lol

Ha, nice. Yeah I've rolled before myself and had good luck when I followed the sticker. Must be awesome running in the ocean, I've done it in the gulf but not wi intense waves.
