1996 XP Multi-function Gauge Not Working

Hello all,

I recently picked up my first Seadoo and I am attempting to fix some problems that it had when I picked it up.

As you may know it has 3 gauges, starting from left to right they are VTS, Multi function, and Speed.

My speedometer and VTS gauge are working (the VTS isn't functional but that is another thread).

I have checked all the fuses and they are good.

I have grounded the overheat sensor wire to the block and it trips the overheat beeper (no light on in multi function)

I have unplugged the oil level sensor and saw no light in the multi function gauge.

I have checked the purple (+) and black (-) wires that feed power to the gauge and they have about 11V when start button is pressed without the key installed.

So, in summary.

Power is getting to the gauge, nothing is happening. What now?

Thanks for the replies!

at this point i'd say you need a new gauge. when you hit the start button/ install the key, the gauge should light all 4 lights and flash the fuel bar to max for about 3 seconds. given what you've already tested, the gauge has probably bit the dust.

Thanks for the quick reply,

Can you think of anything else to check before purchasing a new gauge? (I have to exhaust all options first to get this by the financial department, my wife)

:)

I guess you could try unplugging everything else that can be disconnected, but it doesn't sound promising. If the 96, is like the 95, the power & grounds go through the multi gauge first, then it feeds the other two gauges? if thats true & you have 12V on the red/purple, & the black is grounded it sounds like its a dead duck. You could try disconnecting the black wire to the gauge in the Ebox, & see if all gauges go dead. If so that would verify that the ground wire is good.

If you have power to the gauge then it should power right up with all 4 LEDs and the fuel bar graph all illuminated for a second, then go out and display what it should. If you manually triggered the oil warning and nothing happened, then it's a gauge. I have one in fair shape if your interested. I'll get you some pics if needed. PM me.

Well, I purchased the replacement last night on eBay. I'll be sure to follow up if that fixes the problem.

Thanks,

Chris

The dummy lights work on the new gauge, however the fuel level isn't displaying properly. I am pretty sure it is an issue with the sending unit.

Any tips for investigating this issue?

The fuel floats go bad. It is a $15 part. Either the magnet fell off of the float or it is the old sponge style and does not float anymore.

It is easy to take out too, on the gas tank you will see the fuel baffle, just undo the hose clamp and pull it out. On the bottom of the baffle there is a cap/clip with tabs holding it in place. Carefully pop that off and your fuel float will fall right out. Check the float to see if a magnet did indeed fall off. There should be 2. If one did fall off or is still stuck on the sending unit, then you will have to make sure the magnet is still not attached inside the baffle. if they are both on just replace the float. The float may even just be in the bottom of your tank. I have had the bottom cap clips break and the float fell out of the baffle all togethor.

All three of my skis that had a fuel gage had bad floats. my 95XP, had the gold float with a single magnet that went at the bottom half of the float. The magnet fell out & was stuck to the backside of the circuit board in the baffle. I also bought the float JSG mentioned above, & just popped off the top magnet. Worked perfect. If you have an ohm meter, unplug the sender & see what you have for resistance.
Here's a chart for you.

Here a link to the replacement float. They are available from a bunch of places http://osdparts.com/index.php?main_page=product_free_shipping_info&cPath=1&products_id=7

Thanks to everyone for helping solve this problem.

I pulled out the fuel baffle and inspected the float, it was fuel logged and would not float, more over the magnet was at the bottom of the baffle. I replaced it with the fuel float kit from seadoo PN: 295500438. And all is well.
