Ok, so on my way back from a long ride from Jobbie Nooner this past weekend, I was almost back, and hit some large waves on the way in, my port motor started to sputter, then completely shut down, I couldn't get it started after that. So I let it sit overnight, the next morning went out there, pulled the plugs on it, they were pretty black, cleaned them and re installed, the motor started right up, and would idle fine, but when you give it some throttle it doesn't want to go over 2000 rpm, it just sounds like its bogging down. can anyone point me in the right direction...? where should i start.

First... cleaning the plugs on one of these engines is normally useless. Put in new plugs.

OK... big waves....

1) Did you get any water in the fuel? (probably not)
2) Did you have a fuel line come loose?
3) Did you get water in the electrical?

Also... let's get a compression reading. I have people come to my shop all the time saying they have carb issues... but once I get it... they have low compression in one jug.

yep new plugs.
had some issues with accelerating and stalling. changed the fouled plugs and it was back to normal.

replaced the plugs, now it won't even start. i did a compression test on my running motor, got 120 psi on both cylinders, got the exact same readings on the non running motor as well. it seems like its not getting spark, when im running the starter it wants to start, but wont fire, i did pull the new plugs after trying to start it, one of the plugs has a higher amount of fuel/black color to it than the other plug does, is this because one cylinder isn't firing?

it should start if it was starting before but not running right.
Try pulling choke or give it throttle while hitting starter.....

So it sounds like it almost has a firing order problem or something, it barely idles, it only idles around 1000 rpm. could this be the ignition coil?

You mentioned big waves. I would start looking for something that came loose. Check the electrical box in the back. You may have a spark plug wire loose on the coil or a ground that came loose.

will do, im going to pull the ignition coil from the running motor and put it on the non running motor and see what happens.

just did a little reading through my shop manual, it says if the rpm limiter is failing it can cause no spark, misfiring, etc. im going to bypass it tomorrow and see if that works.

Yes... but if that's the problem... you will need to find an MPEM. (Not easy to do on a boat)

I would pull the MAG cover off the engine, and check for damage, or debris that could mess with the ignition.

I'm still a little new with this, where's the MAG cover going to be?

also did notice this, when the motors were running, on my good running motor when in drive, you can see the water moving behind it, but behind my clogged motor you don't see anything even at the same rpm, could the intake be clogged?? or something tangled around my drive shaft? im only asking this because my boat stays in the water so i havent looked yet.

well i feel like a total idiot, i fixed it lol, i was starting to take apart the carb, when for some odd reason i reached down to check the throttle cables, that little adjustable arm that syncs the two carbs together popped off, causing only one carb to be opened. wow. all i can say is im extremely happy my boats going again and thank you to everyone who helped me through the process!!
