Hi all. I have the chance to get two 1996 GTX's for pretty cheap. They sat outside in the weather last winter and I don't believe they were winterized. Should I just figure they will need to be rebuilt, motor replaced or is there hope for them. Not real familiar with the ski's yet but know there will probably be issues. What should I look for? Any help is appreciated.

Start em up! Theres no way of knowing with out trying, of course there is hope!! What the seller willing to let you do.. There is sticky post that tells you what to look for when buying a new ski.. Put a few drops of oil in each spark plug hole, find some new spark plugs, clip the ends and change the gas and oil to fresh oil and gas if you are trying to be super cautious bringing them back from the dead.. If they start, Id just follow the post on buying a new ski after that... If they dont start come back to the forum and report back what happened and we can try and help you bring it back to life.

Try starting them first. Shut off water then shut off engine.
If they don't start, then turn on hose & run it for only a minute or two at the MOST. You don't want to flood the engine. This way you check for any leaks or block cracks so you know what you are up against.
Their battery will be dead after sitting for a year so bring your own if you have a good one.
If they moan and groan but won't crank then they could be seized. Then low ball the heck out of him and rebuild both engines.

These are great skis. i have a the same with a 787 engine in it....love it to death.

What state is Portage in. If it didn't get a hard freeze you'll be O.K.

I've never tried this, never has a occasion to, if you can't start the motor, block off the three hoses, attach a pressure gauge to the temp. sensor, apply air pressure, and do a leak down test. Also you can visually check the piston jugs look for bulges, also visually check the jug base gasket, see if they're bulging.

None of these procedures are a guarantee but should give a good indication.

Portage is in Michigan so definitely a hard freeze. Thanks for the tips.

I couldn't find the sticky. Can you tell me where it is located? Thanks

LOL there is a portage in every state...

After dealing with some frozen motors, the main place they freeze is the cyl. If you feel down on the left side of the head, by the pipe...where the cyl and head mate; feel for the cyl to be bowed out.

Both motors I've delt with recently ran fine, one is so minor I might use it as a backup. The other one had a crack all the way down the side. That one had sand jammed in the cyl drain tubes...that guy liked driving flood waters. and apparently never flushed.

Thanks for all the replies. I am looking at them today. I think I have him talked down to $800 for both the skis and a nice two place trailer. We will see once I get there. He says he believes they were winterized (I was talking to his daughter first).

For 800.00 you can't go wrong, the trailer is worth close to half of that, worst case you'll part out the skis and double your money.

Yeah, that's what I thought. The one thing I am still worried about is the last registration on them is '08. That probably means they have been sitting for at least 3 years. Could be lots of issues there. But hey, it could be fun reviving these babies and get a good deal. I will report back once I get home.

Yeah $800 is a steal..if you dont want them I'll come get them!! LOL

Its no big deal if they have sat, just drain the gas...maybe the oil too.

Do some research on what you will need to do once you get them. Check compression, get them at least running...maybe take for a quick spin, then do all the preventative maintenance. Fuel lines, rebuild carbs, clean out selector valve, clean Raves, replace oil injector lines, etc.

Well I just got back from looking at them. Both are pretty beat. Cracks in the hull on one. Many deep gouges/scratches in the hull of the other. Trailer is really beat too. It is a shorelander but the back where the tail light hooks on is bent bad (could be fixed). One of the axle supports is bent up and most of the bolts that hold it on the trailer are broke. I did get both motors to turn over by hand after spraying WD40 in them. One turned over with the starter and the other didn't. I think I could get both to run but I didn't really want to mess with them unless it was really cheap. I offered him $300. He said he will think about it. I really don't care either way if I get them or not. I have never done anything with fiberglass and both of them need work on the hulls.
