Hi Everyone.

Im new to this forum and to Jetskis. I have bought a 1996 GTX, which would not start, i soon relised that it was the starter, I sourced a new one and replaced it, removed and charged the battery, and it started on my 1st attempt.

the problem i have and need help on is this, none of the gauges work, the multifunction gauge does not light up, both are just blank. The buzzer does not work, but she starts up every time 1st time.

Can anyone give me some guidence as to where to start looking, ie, fuses etc, Im not sure where they are located.

Many thanks

The fuses are in the gray box, where the MPEM is located.

The dead buzzer is normal. They don't live forever. BUT... if the gauges are dead... I'd say that the fuse is bad.

Look at your wire diagram in your ski's shop manual, and unplug and test the power wire. The guages daisy-chain. Most likely you will be replace the MFG, and buzzer.

are you sure the gauges are broken? or are their display's just not working? if you just need to replace the LCD get some of these kits - http://www.osdparts.com/index.php?main_page=product_free_shipping_info&cPath=6&products_id=44 . worked great for my info gauge...and a lot cheaper than getting new/used ones too!

Hi, thanks for your quick replies.

The gauges do not work, its like it is swutched off, Ive seen the grey box down between the exhaust and the fuel and oil tanks, how do I get the box out, Do I have to remove the fuel tank ??

open up ur front hood and take out ur box the grey box should be right there....

The sun can damage the polarizing film that is inside the gauge face. If the gauges look like the LCD screen may be cracked, faded, or turning dark orange, then the film is wasted. Its at least an hour job if you've done it before just to do one, so its not a walk in the park, but it is cheap to purchase polarizing film. Do a search on the forum and you'll find the procedure for doing it.

However, you may have a wiring harness/electrical issue. Find the wiring diagram online and spend some time just making sure every connector is where it needs to be, both inside the hull and inside the gray box. It will also take some time, but cost nothing. I've never heard of an MPEM failure that allowed the ski to run but the gauges to fail, so I doubt that is your case.

Good luck, you'll figure it out.

OK, Ive looked inside and all I can see is a grey box about 12 inches by 8inches, which is impossible to get out without removing all the exhaust system, the leads from the spark plugs and red battery lead disappear onto it.

Ive had a look at wiring diagrams and I am under the impression that there should be 2 electrical boxes, is this correct. If so, is the grey one that I mention above the front or rear as it is sat next to the fuel tank on the port side just in front of the exhaust.

Also, where would the other be hiding.

Many thanks

The MPEM is under your bow-most storage compartment. it is on the port side. You push down a tab and pull it towards the bow.

There is also a smaller electrical box with fuses on the starboard side right next to the battery. It has at least four large wires coming out of it, and a few smaller one coming directly out of the top.

The exhaust system does not need to come out for anything related to electronics, for the most part.

Maybe this will help you.

The first pic is the front box, it's gray. Un hook the rubber strap and "unclick" the 2 end snaps and then pull it apart. It's located under the front storage bin off to the side.

This is the back box on the battery side. The red power cable from the battery leads to it. Ans 2 cables leading to the spark plugs from it. It also has some fuses under a separate black (fuse size" cover.

As mentioned before NO OTHER parts need to be removed to get to these boxes except the front storage bin.

Thanks so much for your help guys, BUT I have looked and looked again, there is ONLY one box on this machine. Ive attached a couple of photos to look at, as you can see the grey box cannot be removed without the exhaust being removed, I cannot go forward as the fuel tank is in the way !!!!.

This box has the battery + cable and the 2 spark plug leads at one end and a couple of cables coming from the other.

I cannot find any other boxes.

By the looks of the green handle on the side, this is NOT a 96 GTX. A GTX 1996 has 2 removable seats and a hood that opens to give you about 2 feet X 2 feet of working space in the front storage area.

Can you take a pic of the whole ski and a close up of any decals on the hull. Also the vin tag at the back of the hull.

Maybe it's a GTi

A 96 GTX looks just like what is in Seadoobuddy's avatar. Also a 96 GTX has the battery in the rear, not behind the fuel tank as shown in you pic.

Regardless, to my knowledge, there has never been a seadoo made that required any significant parts to be removed prior to pulling the E-box out of its bracket.

Lets assume its a 95 GTX, since they did have that bright green color on them. You would just open the front storage hood. Remove the storage bin. reach in and unclip the ebox from the front, it may resist a bit, but it will lift out if it is unclipped. It may not move much as you are correct that there are several cables going into it. Removing the red cable from the battery may free up some play, removing all of the zip ties on the wiring harness will likely be all that's needed to get the box up front enought to open it.

Thanks guys, here are a few pictures of the seadoo.

THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!

the guy I bought it from told me it was a 96, so are all the fuses in that box, I replaced the buzzer today, and that is now working, so its just the gauges, do you think the fuses are inside the grey box.

I still cant see how to get the box out, I guess I will have to remove the exhaust.

Thanks guys for your help and assistance with this little problem, I now know what model I have and sorted out the problem, Im pretty sure it is the little 5amp fuse that has gone bad on me. I took all the plugs for the gauges apart and a couple of them had water in there, electricity and water, not a good mix !!!!.

I will tomorrow split the exhaust and get the grey box out, check everything in there out and replace the fuse....... hopefully all will be ok.

Once again THANK YOU

the exhaust pipe splits in half....remove the clamo and the 2 bolts and wiggle it aprt then slide the box out

On my 96 GTI I was able to remove the MPEM without taking any part of the exhaust out. I believe the 95 GTX is a similar hull design.. Just wiggle it around til it comes out. Turn it this way flip it over, etc.

Ok, heres an update, of whats happening.
i bit the bullet, removed the top half of the exhaust, got the grey box out and , it was like new inside, all fuses intact, it even had spare fuses in the holder.

Gauges still did not work, I then took the gauges out, opened the bottom to see if any water or crud was inside there...... NOTHING, like new again. I put them back together, I then started doing continunity testing of all the cables, I started with the speed sender, did the static test, this failed, looked deeper and the earth wire(I think you guys call it "ground") had corroded away. I spliced in a new one and got that working OK. I had to renew the earth wire all the way through the craft, right up to the connector near the gauge itself.

I carried on checking all the cables, I found a couple of really dodgy connections, so I cut them out and soldered new ones in.

Re-connected the battery, pressed the started with out the safety lanyard on and hey presto, it all worked.

I then put the exhaust back together, connected the hose pipe and ran her for a couple of minutes, all seems well, the fuel gauge is working fine, as I put some petrol in and she moved up nicely !!!!

So thanks again guys for all your help and assisstance.

Brock1....what's a clamo?......sounds like you're having sex instead of working on an engine.......(sorry couldn't resist it.... :)..)

Glennboy....good detective work. i had a similar problem

Why did you remove the exhaust? All you have to do is take the battery out, 4 pin stator wire and the plug wires off and the box after you unlatch it comes out really easy.
