Hey I'm new on here so I'm not quite sure how this works. I am having some trouble with my 1996 GTI and my 1994 SP. The GTI will shut off when idling and will not restart but it will spin over, neither of the gauges work. The Sp will run at about half throttle but it boggs out when you try to go full throttle, I cleaned the carb because it would do nothing but idle and now it kind of runs ok, it had some hairy looking dirt in the internal screen of the carb. If you know of any possible solutions that would be great!!!

Thanks,

I also read some of the other post and I still have the old gray fuel lines.

You need to replace the gray fuel lines. They deteriorate from the inside out and cause the carbs to clog, even after you clean them. When you clean the carbs uses spray carb cleaner to be sure all the passages are clean.

Thanks, the GTI I have runs great, just as smooth as you could wish for, but then it will just die and will not start untill you give it a kick of starter fluid, and i don't want to use that stuff very much.

I have replaced the fuel lines and cleaned the carb and filter on my 1994 SP and it is still bogging out at full throttle, any one have any ideas?

Should I try running it with the red wire disconnected? I will try some sea foam but everything in the carb looked pretty good.

I think I have the problem with the GTI figured out. The starter will spin the engine continuously with no plugs in it, however with compression it will only spin the motor over one to two times and then kicks out, so I'm thinking a new starter. The 94 sp however i can not get to run right and I'm not sure about taking this red wire off the rectifier, thanks for all of your help guys. I will get them going eventually!
