1996 Gti gray stuff

I just bought this 1996 gti a few days ago. The guy I bought it from said the engine was locked up. So I pulled the plugs and turned it over and it shot an oil gas and water mix about thirty feet in the air. I cranked it a few more times and it got better but still this mix....any body tell me anything. I am an auto tech, never worked on these things before, its all new to me . just need a little info!!

Sounds like the previous owner had water in the motor, probably why the engine was locked up, the gray liquid is a product of a oily watery mixture. Do a compression test to see if your motor is any good, should have between 120 and 150 PSI.

Has 140lbs compression. How do I get all the water out of the engine.

If you have 140 PSI in each cylinder then you have a good motor, If no more gray substance is coming out of the plug holes when turning it over, spray some WD-40 down the holes and and run the motor on the hose for no more than 5 minutes. Remember to start the motor then connect the water and when shutting down, turn the water off then the motor. Hopefully the water has not been sitting in the motor for to long causing corrosion.

With water in the motor, I would be real concerned about the crank bearings. You may get it running again, but if that crank let go, it will make a big mess.

With out removing the engine... all you can do is crank it clear. Don't crank for too long though... you will overheat the starter.


Once you get the bulk of it out... you can put the plugs back in, and use a little starter fluid. If you can get it to catch... it will purge the junk out. Chances are, you will have to pull the plugs, and clean them a couple times before getting it to fire. Once a drop of water hit's them... they won't produce a spark, but once you get fire... the water will evaporate before hitting the electrodes.

AND... as said above... if water has been sitting in it... a crank or rod bearing is going to give up in short order.
