We just picked this up today, the motor will not be touched as it has 160 compression in each cylinder. The engine bay will get cleaned, the fuel lines will be changed and the carbs cleaned. The hood is very damaged but we have a couple spares. We will need to buy a sponson. The decals are in good shape but they will be pulled. We will paint the hood and handlebar pad, rear grab bar, bump rails, and sponsons black. we have black blacktip mats that are going on. The seat will be wrapped black with a navy seadoo stencil. It will get new decals from Dr Honda New start stop button, New battery and a new vts boot.

This should be done in 2 weeks tops. The longest part of this project will be the painting of it. This should be easy, but nothing ever goes as planned for us lol.

Glad to see you got another project going. I will be watching this one closely cuz I have two of these skis, both projects that I need to get to. Will you replace the hull decal? My hull looks real faded and it needs a wet sand, will have to remove the decal.

Finally a GS family build. I was getting tired of watching you do X4's all winter.

We will have a 97 gsx resto coming soon too. I have done gsx's in the past. I am most likely cloning this, exept all white decals on the bottom.

This is the 97 we are going to be starting with, and when I mean starting there is nothing left to this just the hull. So that will be a fun project but will be one of my buddies personal seadoo's

You would never be able to tell that is a 96, looks good.

What are you taking the guts out of to fill the 97, or do you have enough laying around there to complete it.

We have 3 1996 gsx's right now. The one we just got is ready for a makeover, 1 needs the motor rebuilt and the last one the body has problems and the motor is junk, the cases are all busted up and the jugs are bored to the max. So for the 97 gsx we are taking all of the guts and trim parts from the junk 96 gsx and then for the motor we have a beautiful 97 spx motor to drop in it.

This motor is going in it

This is the 2nd seadoo I owned and the first one I went all out on with the exterior change. It is a 97 gsi

awesome man, ive been following another build or two from you... you do some pretty impressive work.. cant wait to see this started !

All of the decals were taken off. The decals on this came off nice and smooth. When I take off decals I use a heat gun and hold it about 2 inches away. I hold it just far enough away that I can still see the red reflection from the heat gun, I go over the outline of the decal then slowly move over the decal overlapping each stroke. I would say each letter gets about 30- 45 seconds of me going over it then I peel up a corner and pull up on an angle working slowly.

In this picture you can see the red glow from the heat guns tip perfectly

I usually can get the letters to pull off in one peice.

As you can see the hull is pretty faded.

The grab bar has a weird knick in it, we have a spare to use though, so no big deal.

I forgot to take a picture with all the decals off. So I ran outside to take a quick picture.

JSG, looking good! Subscribed.

I have particular interest in the painting process if you would like to document it I am sure others would be grateful as well.

Those upper decals looked fine...WTF JSG?? ;)

I have a PRIME 96 GSX resto going right now. I will be posting a thread here once its done. Easily the best one I've ever seen. And yes all decals are perfect. I took the lower ones off b/c the bottom was really faded. Machine has only 71 hours.

I also just PU a 97gsx last week that supposedly had a locked motor. It was the pump. I got the motor fired up, but then found the cyls are cracked from freezing. Its a bit beat, but if I could find the front left decal I could easily mint it out.

MMMMMMM changing the color of the rubrails on the 97? Specifically the rear corner. PM sent

Hibernation seems to be over. Just a little spring cleaning lol,

All need to have the batteries reinstalled and my 96 xp need the handlebar cover and bracket to be put back on. We had to take it off to bet all the measurements for the other brackets. It was 80 here today and as long as this weather keeps up we should be on the lake so. Water temps are still really low and I do not own any wet suits. Maybe it is time to invest in some. We might be able to tuck 2 more in there next winter.

Looks like I got a little ahead of myself when I said 2 weeks tops. I did get some work done on this though.

I took off the mats which already had some of the rivets popped out.

Ok I did not post all of those pictures just to show the mats off. I was taking close ups of how faded the hull is and how stained it is.
I also started to wet sand the hull. I only did one side and here are the begining results.

Here is a shot from the back with 1 side done and the other not touched yet, I did not wet sand the back yet either.

Here are a few more from the side that still needs to be done.

Awesome looking boat, esp as it gets cleaned up.. Ironically I had to replace a broken port side sponson on my 96 GSX, too (Minnetonka4me had a used one in very good shape, I think he mentioned he had others)

I have 3 GSX hulls right now, 96, 97 and 98 limited haha - just took them out yesterday..

What exactly did you use to polish the hull? It looks really good vs the fading you had (that was visible with the decal removal) My 96 has quite a bit of fading thanks to being stored in the water for a few years (though it just broke 60 hours)

I took off the seat cover today

391.jpg

First I just pry up a few staples with a small flat head.
392.jpg

393.jpg

I will only pry up and pull out a few inches.

This is about 4-5 inches.
394.jpg

Then I will run a longer flat head on the inside of the cover and pry up and then slide the flat head forward and repeat until I work all the way around it.

398.jpg

399.jpg

After all the staples are out I carefully go around the edge of the vinyl and seperate the foam.

401.jpg

Now I will let the foam sit out and dry out a bit before it gets rewrapped.

Yawn, Get to the meat n' taters! LOL

Love it as usual JSG! I'm waiting to hear how the sander worked.
