1995 Speedster smoking at idle and no wake

HI,

i am new to the seadoo and jetboat world, and so far i am absolutely loving every minute!

I recently purchased a 1995 Speedster twin engine. It needed some TLC for sure, but I have it now looking pretty sharp. I took it out last night for a little jont around the lake and at the idle speeds it would put off much smoke. I know smoke is normal for a 2 stroke but i have a GSX (1996) but once that one is in the water and running it does not smoke... so this speedster has me scratching my head. It runs super strong and does not appear to be lugging at all. it planes out very quickly and maintains great power and response.

any ideas?

If you can put your hand on engine, its not overheating. I suggest you change out the oil injection lines from injection pump to RV cover, as these get brittle, break & fail after 2-3 years. All older doo's smoke a little. Common. Gas goes bed in 3-4 weeks. Mixing old & new will not help. I usually put some injection oil in my tank to keep moisture from permiating the tank walls. Dump your separator filters each time out to see if contaminates are in tank. Keep'er well greased. Bills86e

thanks Bills86e! it definately is not overheating. i will swap the lines out as well, i think it is due time for all the lines in the boat to be spruced up. Do you think the gaskets would make a difference? i wonder if my oil injection is going bad... do those go bad in these boats?

Yes and no.

No... the injection it self isn't going bad, so you don't have to worry about the engine. The yes part is that the center section seals in the crank are probably going bad, so 2-stroke oil is leaking into the the RV or directly into the bottom of each rod journal.

Unless you are planing a full rebuild... don't worry about it.

I am glad i was thinking on the same page with the gaskets... sooo now is the big question... if i were to go in and replace those gaskets it is easy to do (i do have some mechanical skillset but i am nowhere near a pro... i did a rebuild on a Jeep cj-7 a few years back), how much would this cost? is there a "rebuild kit" that is sold to make it a little easier when shopping for the items i would need?

OK.... The reason I said not to worry about it is because it requires an engine rebuild.

It's not gaskets... it's seals. The 2 seals that are probably the issue are on the center of the crankshaft. No, it's not hard to open up a small 2-stroke engine... but you will have to buy a rebuilt crankshaft. ($250) and if you are going to the trouble of a new crank... you might as well put in a new top end.

So... in reality... you are looking at +$600.

So, once again... don't worry about it. (unless you need a rebuild)


Oh... one last thought. It's a 2 stroke, so it's going to smoke at low speeds. It's just the nature of the beast. So, you could do a full rebuild, and find that it didn't get any better. I have a fresh engine in my sportster, and it smokes at low speeds. Also, my XL700 smoked EXCESSIVELY at idle right from new.
