Hello,

I have a 1995 speedster with the 657x engine, I am in the middle of doing a carb rebuild and am following the manual to the letter, The engine was running good at full throttle but is hard to start and dies when you throttle back. after getting the carbs out the boat I noticed the manual says disconnect the pulse line, It didn't have one???? and the pulse nipple is missing on the carb.

Thanks in advance for any help
Dave

If there isn't a pulse line... the pump won't work. So if you don't have a fuel pump... you aren't going anywhere.

Are you sure you dont have one or maybe you missed it. You shouldnt be going anywhere and you said that you could run it before you pulled the carbs!!

There is a fuel in line at the side of the pump and there is another hole at the top which says pulse but it looks blocked off! I will have a closer look and post pics tonight, sorry for how much of a newbie I am! Where would the puse line be conected to?

There is a hole in the cover marked pulse but there is no nipple on it, where does the pulse line then lead off too?

I'll post pics after and maybe some light can be shed on the situation.

Thanks for the reply

The pulse fitting is broken off on the carb, you'll need to find a replacement, probably buy a used carb off ebay or pwctoday. If you have some skills you can tap it with a fitting of some sort.. :)

Also, you may want to check and make sure the previous owner didn't install a replacement fuel pump somewhere, if not that explains when the engine isn't running.. :)

Yep, what he said.

The carb is busted... and the brass nipple on the engine is an air leak into that Cyl if it's not plugged off. (it will run lean, and melt it down)

The carb you are holding is a "MAG" side carb. The hose on the side of the idle stop screw is the "Fuel in". The top nipple is the return hose, and the bottom nipple is the feed for the second carb.

The broken nipple in the cover won't leak anything, since that is on the back side of the pump diaphragm. The case pressure just pulls it back and forth.

If you are running with out that hooked up... there has to be a pump somewhere else in the system.

I haven't done a lot of work with the '95 boats... but when I saw the nipple on the PTO edge of the engine... something didn't seem right... so I pulled the parts manual.

Sure enough... that's the wrong intake, and carbs. The 95 originally had an inline carb set up... and that's a parallel carb. SO... normally it would pulse feed from the MAG side.

Knowing that you have a "Franken-Engine"... I would take a big step back, and figure out what parts are from what years. THEN... we can make it all work.

Please post a pick of the intake, airbox, both carbs, and engine.

Right thanks for this!

A mate of mine has a 1994 jetski with a seized engine he wants 200 pounds for (300bucks) but the carbs are there and some other bits for the 657x so I'll purchase this. I am home next wednesday so will take some more pictures and check out the carbs on the other side, the port engine is sweet as so hopefully this is the problem, that nipple on the crankcase was plugged into one of the pipes but obviously this carb and the pipwork is all wrong!

Thanks a lot for the help!

Hello All,

Got some in line 657x carbs from an old XP ski, have put my rebuild kit in and put the engine back in the speedster, I have timing the RV to 147 degrees and hooked it all up, Cranks powerfully but no start! Plugs are wet got a small splutter when I tried premix direct to cylinder, got spark compression is even but no start! i sprayed some WD40 direct into the carb and it ran for a couple of seconds, back fired now I get nothing! I will try running a new ground wire and doing the test to see if the RPM limiter is faulty, after this I am stumped. I know some people have had MPEM issues with starting is it possible to run the MPEM from the spare Seadoo XP I have on the starboard engine?

Thanks
Dave

Charged the battery and replaced the negative to the engine now got a very good spark, engine fires but only does about 4 strokes and shuts off. Plenty of fuel getting in both cyl. Does anyone know how to eliminate the MPEM/Rev limiter as a problem? Also is there a quick/easy way of checking ignition timing?
