took the jetskis out today for the first time this year and 3 out of 4 run great but the 95 gtx had problems. starts and runs great out of the water. put it in the water , starts run good, have to idle/ no wake for about 100 yards, nail the gas and it takes off good just about on plane then it falls on its face. to me it acted like no fuel. starts back up but is very irratic on idling and revving. so I'm thinking its a fuel problem so I pull the choke and then it wont even start. so I hold it wot and it starts but still wont go. I havnt checked anything yet but after I got it back on the trailer I pulled the drain and a bunch of water started coming out. so then I pulled the seat off and found that it was filled up about half way with water. could the water cause the running issue? I think I know how the water got in, its only got one clamp on the driveshaft coupler/rubber. thx for any help

Does it still have the gray fuel lines on it because what you are describing is dead on symptoms of bad fuel line , stopped up filters in the carbs and possibly a bad fuel petcock.

sorry, I should have stated more info. I got this ski over the winter and it didn't run and has been sitting for years. so I replaced all the fuel lines and cleaned the carbs to get it running.

Mine filled up with water once due to a loose bolt and snapped stud on the exhaust manifold. It had symptoms similar to this. At first I thought I had a fuel problem. I was actually relieved to see what it was. Pretty simple fix. I have to assume it was sucking water or mist into the intake because it ran like crap unless you were below 1/4 throttle. It filled it up right about level with the head. Didn't sink. I was impressed and happy to make it back to dock. Got it bailed and fixed. Then it ran like normal.

I'm hoping this is what happened to mine. I don't think I had as much water as you but there was a lot. I just got done working on it and found out why the clamp was missing from the boot, the coupler bearing was seized on the shaft. I had to cut the driveshaft twice to get it out. I'm going to order the parts tonight so I should have an update in a few weeks. thx, chris

If you only "cleaned" the carbs, I am betting that is the issue. They need rebuilt with OEM gaskets and do not replace the pop-off springs with the new springs that come with the kit.

while I was on the water I was thinking carbs too. but what would make the difference in the carbs in or out of the water? because it runs and revs great out of water and it ran fine when it was first put in the water.

If you only cleaned the carbs there's probably or will be a problem and depending on the circumstance could result in an expensive problem. Do yourself a favor and rebuild the carbs with OEM parts. I use kits from OSDparts.com.

Out of the waster there is no load on the engine so it requires less fuel masking a lean condition.
In the water there is a full load on the engine all the time so the fuel restrictions become more obvious.

ok, its been awhile since I took the skis out but today is the first chance we have had with the weather and being to busy. after fixing the driveshaft coupler and keeping the water out the ski ran great with only one issue, it smokes a lot compared to the other skis while idling and putting along. is this an easy fix of adjusting the oil mixture? also how is the adjustment made?
