I have a bog standard 1995 gtx 657x.

Would like to get a little more performance and top speed out of her.
Not looking to break the bank or end up with a ski I have to tune each time I take her out.

Have been offered some K&N air filters for her and wondered if they would make a difference.

Would also like to hear from anyone who has done mods to and is currently using the 657x and is happy with the results.

That's it. Apologies if this has been answered a thousand times before. If so I am not a good thread searcher!

The best bang for the buck is a new impeller. Anything else will jeopardize reliability.

I do no recommend aftermarket flame arrestors. Unless you have a highly modified engine... they won't give you any extra performance, and they don't protect the engine from drinking water in a roll-over.

Basically... with what you said... sell your ski, and get one with a bigger engine. I know that sounds drastic, but if you sell yours, and add $500 bux to that (what you would spend on some light mods)... you can get a ski with a 800 engine in it.

that is about the truth to that. hot rodding a 2 stroke is like lighting a stick of dynamite. its gonna explode sooner than later.:agree:

this section isn't labeled....Sell it, if i want Max Power....

The guys' here to find power, and posted in "right" section...

Alright bud, if anything, an impellor, which solas or skat-trak, both have an application list, as to what/you plan on doing, to your motor...a set of aftermarket filters..proks, k/n..etc, and atleast a rossier/coffman pipe. From the sounds of it, a Facotry Spec2 or Spec1 will give the most power, but need a "tight" motor...aftermarket head with pump gas compression domes...from there, should give you some power.

i was not saying its wrong. i was just telling the truth. yes impellers will make a difference. but 2 stroke motors dont hold up well to "mods".

Absolutely right, not looking for selling to upgrade. That was not his question. He can work with what he has with what was mentioned above. Although, I, would do the flame arrestors first. The easiest way to get your motor breathing more air and more fuel which equal more power, in turn, more speed. Then I'd do an impeller. After that you want more power, or even faster, then I'd consider upgrading your head or a pipe but now your into it for some $$ and possible reliability if your not careful. You can have a well modded ski thats reliable, if you pay attention and check things often.

Whats your main objective to get to? More pull from the start? More top speed? Thats gonna tell you where to go for mods.

You are correct, NO MOTOR will hold up well to mods if its not done properly or paying attention to while riding. Me, I check my plugs EVERY ride, period! Then I know whats happening in my motor. My XPL is well modded and I have NO problems because I pay attention.

Even with the new 4-tec motors, you can have supercharger failure which is very costly. So its not the 2 stroke, its paying attention.

I adjust my carbs throughout the season, spring, summer, and fall. All because the air temp, air density, and humidity are different. Yes I can set it so it runs great in the summer, but it will be very fat in the spring and fall I would be down 250 rpm.

Whats the point of putting a taller impeller on (more speed) if your motor may not be able to turn it? You will load the motor up if you drop rpm and heat the rear pto cylinder up and lead to burning it down.

Cheapest most effective mod is the f/a and rejet.

Agreed, doesnt matter if you have a 2 stroke or 4 stroke. You CAN modify them with little problems if you are sensible about it and know its limits after what you have changed with it. Not saying you wont have the possibility for shorter life span, but that is the sacrifice you have to make. Whatever you do with it, like Jwick mentioned, check your plugs and make sure you run the correct octane fuel (if comp is raised) and make sure it is jetted correctly to match your performance mods.

Sounds like seadooya and jwick have given you a few good pointers, have fun.
