1990 SP Starter Problems

Went to the lake today and after having a great time my son went to start the ski to take the last ride and it didn't start right away so he try to start it again but he try it before the starter stop completely and went blank and now it wont start all it does when you press the starter switch is grind. I need help, If this require the starter to come off or replace I have no idea where is located. I can to the job myself but need help how to get there.

Sounds like you shredded the bendix drive. So yes the starter will have to come out.
It is located underneath the exhaust manifold on your 587 engine.
Its tight. 2 bolts and the ground have to be removed i beleive.
For easier access, you could pull the pipe, but it can be done with some long extentions and feeling around, or a small mirror.
Also, make sure you disconnect the battery first. You dont want to arc something and blow your ski to bits.
To save you the hastle.. DO NOT remove the front cover. the little rubber seal will swell 3x its size and you wont be able to put it back together without a new one. Once you get the old starter out, I would try to shopvac the rest of the bits out of the mag cover, install new bendix, then re-install the starter. Bendix is probably around 30$

Should be three bolts, one on the rear of the starter and two up front.

After removing 2 bolts from the starter got stock on the third one, One of the exhaust bolt broke few years ago and been running like that so I decide to take the motor out that may take an extra day or two but is easy and that way also I can clean the fuel tank. Quick question, The motor was rebuilt few years back is a strong running ski, compression is 160 on each. but since im going to take it out any suggestion on what should I look for or replace before I put the motor back in.

Can somebody post step by step how do you remove this 1990 sp motor. I am a car mechanic not marine mechanic so is confusing when you about to do something and somebody start telling you stuff. I heard you can remove the motor without touching the jet pump, Others say you have to remove the jet pump. And also alignment, I guess also need step by step how do you alignment after putting the motor back in.

Yes you will need to remove the pump. If you haven't already done so download a manual. To do the job right you will need to align the engine. Personally I wouldn't remove the engine to change the starter.

Eh I've done it both ways, it's easier by removing the pump but more time consuming. You'll probably find it is best to remove the pipe and exhaust manifold. That will give you very good access to the starter. It will only cost you 30 minutes and two gaskets.

Edit: I forgot you have issues with an exhaust bolt.....

I'm gonna disagree with you here, it only takes 15mins. to remove the pump, time well spent, plus you're going to have to remove the pump to align the engine anyway.
