I was in the water last week and suddenly the ski stop moving, start good, engine runs good but wont go. I took it home remove the pump and found out the drive shaft bumper in the pto side was gone and the impeller was gone also. I replace the impeller, put new bumpers, new wear ring, took it to the water again and same thing happen, just wont go and you can hear a grinding noise. I remove the pump again, impeller is good, drive shaft is good, so sound like pto is bad. basically I would like to hear other opinions since im not a pro. I believe there is nothing else that can cause this, correct? Also, will a pto from 587 whitw engine fit a 587 yellow engine? and if the pto go bad can that cause something to go bad in the crankshaft? Thanks in advance, I still will hit that thanks bottom.

More than 12 hours and no opinions? no help?? I want to put this thing back in the water but i am confuse with this problem. Out of the water everything work, PTO spin and impeller spin everything work and no noise, once you put it in the water don't go, I can see PTO is spinning and impeller also spinning but just don't go. You can hear a grinding noise coming from PTO but PTO is spinning even if I hit the throttle it spin. I would like some advice before I remove the PTO. Also what about those two screw behind the PTO? do they have something to do with PTO removal?

Either the drive shaft splines are bad or the mounting at the PTO.

In order to get to the PTO with full view the shaft and pump have to come out. So pull the shaft and look at the splines as they fail often. If they are good, then open up the PTO.

I got everything off the ski, The impeller is good the drive shaft is good and the PTO look good to me, splines are good. So look like the problem is the PTO mounting on the crankshaft, does that make sense? is that normal? Will another PTO fix the problem or can that cause damage to the crankshaft? Also, I already try to remove the PTO with the rope method and it work it lock the crankshaft but didn't even move the PTO and I did it with the help of two friends, it is really that hard to remove? BTW, I know there post about similar problems but i haven't seem anything regardless the PTO mounting on the crankshaft.

Is this a complot between mods and some users not to help members that are not here everyday? What else should it be that I cant get any help and other post keep getting reply.

There's no plot on this forum, everyone gets treated equally. The fact is that you have an older ski, a ski that most of us have not worked on. You will just have to be patient until someone who is more familiar with your ski can help you. Also this is the time that most of us are able to get out on the water, myself included, so there is limited time to spend on the forum. There are a couple of things you could do to help us help you, complete the member information, provide your location and the watercraft that you own.

First, if all looks good as you have noted then it is your PTO I would think.

Second, NO ONE plots against anyone here. You are way off in that one. WAY OFF !!! There are cases where individuals have issues with others and they steer clear of each other. But even that is very rare here as this is a fantastic site with great people. I was gone all weekend and still checked in as best I could. I have not removed a PTO as of yet so my info is not that helpful for you at this point.

Many have, give them some time and hopefully they will see the post. I would start a new thread with your specific need in the title. HOW TO REMOVE PTO? kind if thing.

Now just wait a cotton-pickin minute here mods; I personally plot against everybody.

ratonboy, ease up a little; I know we all get impatient at these things occasionally ... do not ask me about the 2 frozen-in head bolts that I have been intermittently working on removing for a year. This is about the best, most helpful and friendly site I have seen.

I have 89, 90, 91 SPs so may be able to help a little. I have been following this and trying to get a firm grip on what is happening so let me charge ahead.

Impeller (propeller) just fell off?

Grinding sound, both in and out of water?

With drive shaft out, start engine (can run safely for a few seconds to a minute without cooling). Grinding sound go away?

Does it look like the grease fitting on the PTO lubricating the splines has been used?

Should be standard right-hand threads connecting the PTO to the crank. Maybe a pipe wrench on the pto and some light tapping with a hammer?

Slide the pump and shaft back in and insure the splines are actually slipping or even connecting. I do not know if the engine can even come loose and slide forward?

History show fresh or salt water use?

have fun
