Hi everyone,

I just bought a 90 GT from the original owner. It's been in freshwater only and he told me it needs a top end and the price was great so I bought it.

I'm a decent mechanic but know nothing about these old yellow engines. Are they worth doing a top end on or should I just get a rebuilt and be done with it?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

it's a 26 year old engine. There's no way the lower is still going to be good, if the top melted down. It's a full rebuild.

Ok, I got the pipe out and pulled the head and cylinders to take a look. One piston came apart a fine bit and the other one looks good. I'm thinking I might need to check and see if my compression tester is accurate. The bottom end actually looks good and feels tight.

Who sells rebuilt yellow 587 engines?

This is the order I would consider personally if i needed a rebuild. Only based on reviews from other members though.

1 fullboreonline.com
2. Seadooengineshop.com
3. Shopsbt.com

The first two will rebuild your engine, so longer turn around. You can do an exchange with SBT but may end up with someone else's salt water rebuild.

I found out why the piston went bad. The previous owner had a transom drain plug in the oil fill tank and got water in the oil.

Maybe I'll just flush the oil system and add new oil and keep the pump system operational
