I have a 1990 580 GT and it runs perfect when it will start. The starter engages for only a couple of seconds and then it pulls back in and just spins. You can hit the starter for a breif second and it will turn the motor but then the bendix disengages again. I have bypassed the cylinoid and wired straight to starter and it does the same thing. The flywheel has some minor damage but looks good and all the teeth are in place. The bendix on the starter does look worn but the spring and cylinder move back and forth freely. I finally got the starter off (wow was that fun) and now i am wondering what to do?? do i need a new starter or what?? Thanks in advance for any help!!

3 options

get a rebuild kit
buy a new one or a sbt one
buy an OEM one on ebay

do not buy the aftermarket ones that look too good to be true

Thanks for the reply, so it sounds like its definately the starter then huh? can an regular starter shop rebuild the one i have?
