im new to the forum but this my 2nd ski. i just traded an old dirtbike for my sp, i put in the water and it started with out to much trouble took a few hits of the starter, but when i gave it full throttle it didnt seem to get up to full speed and when id let it idle it shut off. it did that 2 or 3 times but on the last time it didnt start again till the next day, its running and starts ok but im guessing the carb is the reason it wasnt getting to full speed. this is my first seadoo so i dont know to much about them and help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated

Yep... what he said. If you have gray fuel lines... they need replaced, and the carbs need cleaned.

Check the compression and make sure you havent screwed it up already before you start spending time and $$ on it.

the lines have been replaced and the fuel selector switch isnt hooked up, it froze on the previous owner. I don't have a compression tester but it blows my thumb of even when leaning on it. so the only thing left is the carb. ive never had to clean a seadoo carb so is there anything special I should know about it before I dig into it. what should I adjust to make it right

I would compression test before you spend dough. What you described before are lean/cold seizes.

at the very least take the carb(s) off and check the filters inside. Also open the other side and make sure they arent rusty.

It also can be the pickups rotting inside the tank on the oldies like this.

Set carbs per factory spec unless its been modified in any way.

You got quick and solid advice from a couple of the real pros here in the above responses.

Compression testers are not that expensive. My personal experience is that the less expensive ones may not be really accurate so my personal advice is to take multiple readings with multiple testers unless you have access to a real professional tester.

I have the same 89 SP and have, in my very limited free time, been working to get it back in shape. I reiterate the above relating to the fuel system and the rotting fuel pickups; in mine I found both of the pickup lines severely rotted and one of the screens at the end of the pick-up lines fallen off and stuck in the gunk in the bottom of the fuel tank. It is a bit tight, but you can remove the oil and fuel tanks through the forward hatch for cleaning; I highly recommend doing this as I found over a quarter-inch of honey-like crap in the bottom of the fuel tank that I could only get cleaned out with gasoline ... carefully.

Good luck, you have found a real treasure trove of good information on this site.

ok ill check the lines in the tank and clean the carb and compression test tomorrow. what are the factory setting for the carb because its all stock, and the compression should be 150psi right. oh and i started it today, started pretty easy ran for a minute or so the bogged but i gave it sme throttle and it came back and didnt do it again. ill let you all know how it goes tomorrow
