03 GTX start button intermittant

I have found a couple of threads on this issue but I have a question that has not been asked or answered yet.

My 03 GTX engine will start fine when the starter engages. But when I push the start button I hear a click but the starter will crank/engage maybe 1 of 3 attempts. I have not been stranded yet, and it can start first attempt too. The battery is NOT AGM and is 1 year old.

The different question is: this GTX sat outdoors and unused for about a year (yea, not good but the circumstances were quite unusual). I'm wondering if corrosion on the start button could be a culprit here? Or if I should look into the solenoid first? Perhaps a ground has gone partly bad too. I'm really looking for a quick list of places to look as I don't know my way around the engine compartment as well as many here do. Thanks for your advice.

I would lead more in the direction of a dirty starter solenoid. Jump the solenoid with something and see if it starts/cranks each time as it should. If so, you know the battery, cables, connections and starter is good. Then test the voltage at the trigger wire on the solenoid using a DVOM. It should be 12 volts or more each time. If it is, then the solenoid is likely the issue.

It is common for the internal components to have arc marks and get dirty. When this happens, it makes a poor connection and affects how the starter engages.

very good, thanks for the advice. I'll start as you suggest.

One quick question: where roughly is the starter solenoid located? Near the starter? I don't have the GTX nearby to look at so maybe it's obvious.

Follow the battery hot wire. It will lead you right to the solenoid.
