02 RXDI questions

I have been lurking here for a little while and searching but I cant find the answers I'm looking for. I just bought an 02 RXDI and it fires up good on the trailer and runs good but in the water it runs for just a minute and shuts off. so online I go trying to find out how to work on this thing and I end up here.

My first question is how are people checking the air pressure to the fuel rail? I found posts on checking the fuel pressure and I see some people cut the line and add a tee and some use a spare line just for testing, but I haven't found anything about testing air pressure.

My second question is about the rave valves. I was checking compression and one cylinder was around 120 and the other is at 100 so I looked inside with a bore scope and notice the cylinder was scared up where the rave valve is. I pulled the rave valve and it has been hitting the piston. I believe this is a stock engine that has never been into so I don't know how this is possible.

I know I need to redo the top end but I still need to try and find out if that is the only issue before I tear it down.

Thanks for any help you can give,

Rodney

Thanks for the reply. So is there any reason to check pressure on the air side of the rail?
If I remember right there is 130 hours on it.

At 100 you are done. If you don't have a good "base engine" then nothing else matters. If there is 300 ish hours on the crank, then you need a total rebuild as the crank would not survive a new top end.

I'm guessing you are talking about 100 on the compression. I hope at 130 hours the crank will be ok.
Any idea what would cause the rave valve to hit the piston?

The only way the valve can hit the piston is if it breaks or if the cylinder was bored and the valve was not cut.

Yep 130hrs on a crank is right there at the point of no return. Do I, or do I not put a new crank in it.
I would probably lean more towards just a top end rebuild.
I can't tell you how many DI's I have seen with a blown piston because of using cheap oil. Seems like every one I look at with a blown piston has blue oil in the tank and a clogged up oil filter.
Not saying you don't use good XPS oil, I just relating my experiences, but based on what I have read in this thread I would go with a top end, new oil filter and XPS oil.
While the engine is out pull the fuel tank and clean it thoroughly. Clean the fuel pump by running gas/toluene mix through the fuel pump and change the two internal fuel filters. Change the external fuel filter and clean the injectors.
Also while your at it, take a good look at the compressor piston and sleeve. Replace if necessary, they usually are ok, but if it looks worn just replace. Compressor piston and sleeve are an inexpensive and easy to replace item.

If you decide to change cylinders or the head make sure you get 02 or later parts as they are different from earlier models and double check the part numbers.

Good luck.

Also I can't stress enough to fog any 951 after every ride.
Also you need to use OEM pistons in a DI engine the aftermarket ones do not have the same coating treatment and will not last as long as OEM ones. The DI is a lean burn engine and operates at higher temperatures than any other ski built.

I've used WSM pistons with good success, but not with the 02 and later as they burn a little leaner due to EPA regs.

I am going by Bill Oneills and Watercraft Magics experience. They claim they tried all aftermarket pistons and the only ones that survived were OEM. You can't dismiss Bill O on seadoo facts.

Dang I had no idea that I needed to use oe pistons and they are not cheap.
I just bought this ski so I don't know what oil was used in it but I plan on cleaning the oil tank and the fuel tank and changing all of the filters while I'm doing it.
Thanks for all of the replies I need all of the help I can get on this thing.

Keep us posted. We will help you through it.

I'm rebuilding a 2000 RXDI for my dad that's been sitting since 07 I have a new rebuilt engine that we will be installing soon and one piece oil tank from a 96 gsx but I need to get the fuel system up to par. What do you suggest should be used to clean out the fuel tank? Just gasoline? Mineral spirits? Can the injectors be cleaned at home or do they need to be sent out? Can the air injectors be cleaned as well?
