My 2001 GTS will run for several minutes then stall. I wait a minute or two and it restarts. This was infrequent, and only seemed to happen when under heavy load, towing or three passengers, but got to the point where I would run on smooth water at 3/4 throttle, or putting thru no wake zone, for a few minutes and it just quits with no warning or beeps. Hooked up to hose, head and exhuast feel cool, pisser working. If I shut it down, restarts without waiting half the time. Someone said it could be "piston lock"? meaning running too lean and the piston locks in the cyclinder. Turned the mixture screw counter clockwise , so far about 1.5 turns , a 1/4 turn at a time, with no difference or getting worse. Am I turning it the wrong way?
No rebuild history that i know of. Accelorator pump was replaced, and this started happening and has become progressively more frequent.

Got in the engine bay and pulled on a couple lines and they came off with little or no effort. So hopefuly new lines and a carb cleaning and I'll be in the water again.

I'm in the same boat with my two GTS's. The lines aren't two hard to do, don't forget to clean out or replace your fuel selector valve, it can get blocked up in there as well. Also you'll want to clean out the fuel filter in the carb and the fuel filter coming off the selector valve.

Fuel issue resolved. Now I ride hard , get the motor warmed up, and it cuts out. No Spark, until I wait a minute or two. Happens at low or high speed.

There are three wires going to the DESS post

- White/Gray
- Black/Yellow
- Black

The black wire is ground. The other two wires use the black wire as common.

Here is what happens when you put a key on the post. There is a small reed switch in the post that connects to the black/yellow and black wire. The key has a magnet in it, so it closes the reed switch, effectively shorting the black/yellow and black wires together.

This turns on the MPEM. It begins sending out a signal on the White/Gray wire. The center post of the DESS post is connected to the White/Gray wire, and when you put the key on, it makes contact with both the center post and the ring on the post, which is connected to the black wire (ground) This signal "turns on" the key, and it sends the serial number of the key to the MPEM over the White/Gray wire. The MPEM reads this serial number, and if it matches one of the key serial numbers stored in memory, it activates the MPEM which sends out the two beeps. Once this happens, the key circuit is shut off. It no longer has any function, except that the magnet is needed to keep the MPEM alive. The short between Black/Yellow and Black must always be present to keep the ski running.

A lot of times I see recommendations to clean the key, for people that have problem with the ski quitting while running. This is inappropriate advice; cleaning is only recommended if the ski will not start.

Any break in the electrical signals will shut the mpem down until its re-armed. Non-techs have used the olhmter probes into the female or
holes the amp pins fit into, and that enlarges them. Then if no dielectrical grease, the pins develope corrosion.

So, I take it that all guages shut off along with the motor when this happens ? If not, it is fuel related, not electrical.
If you detirmine it is electrical, open and clean every connector and secure them well. If it has a coil box, be sure it is dry inside the box.

Interaction of the starter and the flywheel eventually degrade and the small metal particles find their way into the Stators, and electrical
havok begins interuption of signals. Inspect every 4-5 years, clean, vacuumn, and install a new cover seal.

I can almost set a watch to the shut down. After 15-20 minutes of flawless riding it will shut down. No spark present. wait about a minute, reset the key. and it will continue this process until it is not ridin for several hours ( cool off). tried new coil. same results.

Next time it occues, have a short piece of fuel line into a catch bottle, pull the return fuel line off, connect the line and start. If nothing comes out, its a clogging issue.

Carb was cleaned and diaphrams replaced prior to the "No Spark after stall" issue. maybe i didnt explain right. Reset key, still no spark, wait , then will start. This is reason for trying coil replacement.
