So i have been talking with my friend and we think we might try and build this. I know we are not the 1st people to put a 951 in an x4. What is the best way to do this? Will a 951 bolt in to a 96 xp? Will the electronics of a 96 xp 800 work on the 951? I understand this would be a lot of work but if i was to put a stock 951 in the x4 i would still have reliability. At least more then if i was to heavily mod a 787. Let me know what you guys think. I'm not sold 100% yet but i would like to build a big toy and im just not in to the newer skis.

Thanks
scott

Buy my 2000 XP for $2500. it will be cheaper and 100x easier. it's already a running 951 XP.

If you don't want that, I have a complete (minus head gasket) 951. that includes the oil pump, magneto, starter, carb adapters, reeds.

Everything but the carbs/exhaust.

I'll even leave on the rear engine mount!

$800.00

I thought the engine was having issues, pulled the head. Turned out to be the jet pump bearings making the god awful noises.

I didn't figure this out until the engine was already out of the ski, and I dropped another in. (my 02 XP)

(I keep spare engines around)... or used to. I'm selling 2 of my skis, parts and .. an engine lol.

You are going to need a donor ski pretty much, all electronics, the pump, exhaust, plus I think you need to glass in new mounts.

i have never road that body style. Just getting ideas. I will keep the engine in mind though. Do you have the carbs?

The parabolic hull compared to the x4 hull is night and day difference. They are both fun to ride though. Also if you do a 951 in a x4 I have heard you have to weight the hull on one side, to account for the added weight of the top heavy motor

ok i'm going to say this right off the bat. unless you truly love this sport and do not get flustered easy, do not attempt this build.

that being said there are links to other x4 951 builds in the x4 thread in the first few pages. also my on going project phoenix.

but here is the short version and answers to you questions:

no a 951 will not just drop in and work, the rear mounts are the same the front however is reversed. so you will have to either: a. fiberglass in a new motor mount and drain path or B. modify the front mag cover and create a new mount, however with this method you will have to run premix as you'll be intruding on the oil pump space with the new mount.

also the exhaust is reversed on a 951 so you will either have to build a custom waterbox and crossover pipe or cut a new though hull fitting and glass up/ fill/ plug old one, i did see one where a guy made a dual exhaust one but there are no advantages to it and it might have hurt his performance.

electronics: a single mag cup 951 will run on the 96 electronics if you have a msd enhancer or have the 951 timing curves re burnt onto the 96 mpem.

pump: you can use your stock 140mm pump, however thats like putting a 700hp motor in a car with only one gear. the whole reason you're doing this swap is so you can go faster. to go faster you must process more water so you can either use a stock 951 pump and modify the bottom holes, seal off the baler lines and make a new cooling port, or modify and glass in a gsxl pump shoe.

when it comes down to it a 951 power base has more potential than 787 so if you're planning on adding more power down the road a modded 951 will make more power, more reliably than a comparable 787. however a mildly modded 787 will be more reliable than a 951 stock or modified, even tho it has less power.

dang man, thanks for all the info! You nailed it all. I have been reading on other builds im just not sure what i want to do. I love the x4 but maybe i should try the other hull

it's a super fun ski, jumps, cuts, it's the best thing I've ever ridden, and I've ridden a lot of skis, including the X4 hull. I rode a few 96 XPs although my fav color scheme is the 99 SPX.

I don't have a set of carbs for sale, sorry. at least I don't think I do. I'd have to check my basement inventory.

you can get 100% brand new carbs for $375-400 online, so if you are dead seroius about this project, that's also an option.

But yea, unless your super gung-ho about this... I'd skip it.

the 97+ XP also has a 14.7 gallon fuel tank, so you can run a lot longer than the 96 version.

My dream was always a 951 powered go-kart. Most go-karts are like 5... maybe 10 HP?

how about a 130 HP go-kart?! Zoom Zoom ;)

not a problem, i researched this for two years before i took the plunge and just started it. what finally got my but in gear was i was talking to a friend of mine and told him what i was thinking about and how long i had been reading up on it and, i'll never forget this:

he said how long have you been working on skis?
i replied, about 5 years
he then scolded me saying dude, wtf, its time for you to get out from behind the keyboard and actually do it, any man can be a forum warrior, but you're nothing until you get out and prove yourself.

it hit me really close to the heart and i did it, mine is going to be a statement as to what i can do, the flagship of my shop.

i will also say this, there is nothing like the feeling of being able to build something that is custom and completely you and your style is awesome.

what part of Ohio you in?

I know what you mean by the flagship of your shop. I was just reading your build and man i got to hand it to you. nice work so far. North West part of ohio. I live on Grand Lake St marys. I'm still a young guy (only 25) and have lots to learn. I have rebuild 2 of the 787s and 1 of the 720 but never did any thing like you have.

believe it or not i'm younger than you, i'll be 24 in march. its all about preparation, learning and desire. if you want to do it, go for it. the before mentioned bubby lives up in Chardon about 3 and half hours from you and runs a performance shop. i can pm you his number if you want, he might have a half started project or some leads on parts for whatever you wanna do, 787 or 951.

I have a pretty detailed build on green hulk under 951x4 different spin. Stock 951 is angry reliable animal!

Still running hard!
