Would you run this head? Pulled off my 96 XP Pics Inside

My 96 XP has been a PITA, since I bought it a month ago.
Previous owner said the topend was done, which I can attest to by looking at head bolts, and other tell tale signs. Compression was also 150psi.

So today my buddy was over and I ran past him the idea of pulling the head off and taking a look just to have some peace of mind. When I lifted the head off I saw the MAG cylinder dome and nearly shit myself.

Based on what I see, the head was damaged before, and someone took a dremel tool or something like that to it in an effort to smooth it out. Now, call me cheap or whatever, but if its not going to be a performance problem I *might* reuse the head. Please analyze the pictures and tell me if it would be an idiotic thing to do.

It would probably be fine but I would send it to Group K. They will recut the squish and make sure it is flat and might even bump performance a little for $90.00.

personally im anal, and would not run this head... If i guess at it, i usually buy new... or send it to get fixed..

:lol:hahaha ...just gotta add this in...my manager told me this morning while we were arguing that he is (ANAL ABOUT HOLES) LOL sorry you had to be there...i work in the car business ......its all about preferance with the head...if you dont feel comfortable running it then get a new one

If your not having compression or performance issues I'd run it like it is. I've actually seen quite a bit worse but it does look like the PO did a crappy job sanding it down. Good luck.

confidence is key, if you're worried about it its gonna bother you and you wont be happy... ive run motors with much worse as well, but i ended up buying a new one cause it worried me it was going to blow up in the middle of the ocean, and a shark was going to eat me, be shark crap, and then eaten over and over again by krill and other marine life.... doesnt sound so fun anymore...

i hate sharks...glad the bigest thing we have are sturgeoun

Biggest thing we have are catfish...yum!

Seriously I know what you mean Bruce and in the case of going offshore I agree you have to have everything in tip top condition and if you happen to uncover a potential problem it would only behove you to repair it. All I'm saying is that in my case I would chance it but then again i'm on an inland lake and if I break down I phone the kids and within 10 minutes they are there with the boat to tow me in. The last thing I would want to do is give someone advice that could lead to an accident. To that end, just know all my comments are my opinion and not to be construed as a mechanics expert advice. There that's my caveat...now my attorney will be happier.

personally i would worry about the sharp edges getting hot and causing detonation.if it was me(and its not) i would get a good used one.

That head is fine.

As above... you don't want sharp edges... but from the pics, it looks like it's been filed clean.

Run it.
