Worst case scenario? Fuel system

I’m definitely not the original or even second owner. This one has lived a full life or two before me, I believe. It was pretty ugly when I got it. But I did a lot of stuff to make it look better. I got it very cheap (parts price) and was prepared to be happy even if I had to replace motor. But luckily I got at least a full season of use out of it so far...almost two now! I’ll post a before and after photo later.

I’ll keep you posted on what the dealer says. I have no idea on statute of limitations but hopefully they still have one of these old “new and improved” tanks lying around and just fix it!


Me too....I bought my '96 GTX on a lark...it was forlornly sitting on the dealer lot and I said alright, I'll take you home....it is my biggest PITA favorite ski.....when it runs....when it runs, hands down funnest and fastest one we have, but she needs TLC (and I haven't had the time YET YET YET!)
 
Well the dealership called me back and I’m taking it in tonight. They said first they will do an inspection, and if it checks out, they will order parts and repair free of charge. Not sure what’s involved in this inspection...but still a little skeptical for now.
 
All the should be checking it the VIN and the date on the tank to make sure it wasn't replaced previously.
 
How do you find the tank date? Maybe I should check it myself to make sure I’m not wasting my time. I’ve only owned this a couple years...so no idea if tank is original.
 
It's molded in the top but if it was replaced under warranty it would be tied to your VIN in the Seadoo Computer system.
 
My 96' XP still needs the recall but the closest shop is 1.5 hours away and they need it for at least a week. Might wait till winter but I have been saying that for years.
 
Haha I hear that. There’s never really a convenient time to do stuff like this. I have a work trip coming up so hopefully it times well with their schedule to do it then.
 
You mentioned it had been submerged, if you pulled plugs to pump water out water may have been forced through pulse line and compromised fuel pump check valves (wrinkled) and results are reduced fuel volume. You have OEM air box or aftermarket flame arrestor? If aftermarket my usual suggestion is lower pop-off, especially if a little choke or shot with primer makes it take off briefly.....
 
So...I have to give major props to BRP. They exceeded my expectations! Replaced the faulty gas tank with a brand new one in a 23 year old ski! And on top of that...they disposed of the old fuel and filled it up with fresh fuel. All for no charge..covered under warranty! Looking forward to some free time to find out if the repair fixed my fuel delivery problem.

It took me a little bit to get back to updating my thread, but I'm very happy to report that after BRP dealership replaced that old tank with the crack in the filler neck tube--this thing runs great. Great end to this season. Hopefully the weather holds up for a few more runs!

In regard to the old cracked tank...I really think there must have been something going on where sometimes the crack in the tank was really lined up and not allowing in much air (no symptoms)...and then after some time hitting waves or warming up the engine, somehow that tank flexed enough to let air in. When the ski was working...it worked fine. But when it wasn't working well, the best way I can describe it is like if you try to drink a beverage through a straw with a hole in it. It seems like you have to try so hard just to drink. And it was similar with the fuel delivery and working the throttle, and feeling like engine could get enough fuel.

Anyway...now all of that problem is gone. I ran it for a solid hour+ and took it through plenty of turns, waves, etc, and it had really good performance.

One question i still have, is does anyone know what the normal RPM Max limit is (not the rev limiter), but what is the top number that should be referenced when the engine is under load and at full throttle?

I added a tiny tachometer to mine to set the idle speed...so now that it's running well at all speed ranges, I was wondering if 6030 as a top RPM is normal or not? (as a reminder, this is a white motor 5817 GTS). 6030 was my max RPM on really smooth water. I tried to look this up myself in the manual...but the only note I can find is around the rev limiter. And there is also a note around setting timing that says to bring RPMs up to 6000. But is 6000 the top end that should be expected under load in the water? Or something else? Appreciate any help!
