It appears to be a gs or gsi. It's supposed to have the 717 single carb engine, but your motor looks like a 587 motor. Im not certain about the motor though. Hopefully someone else can help

the seat is not original, the padding is missing from the footwells, the original graphics have been removed and the original airbox/flame arrestor has been replaced with an aftermarket one. But it is a GSX

EDIT - sorry, I mixed up the hood colors of the '96 and '97 GSX, looks like a GS or GSI

5 questions
1. What is the motor size on the plate on top of the magnito houseing?
2. What is the last two numbers on the plate on the rear of the ski?
3. What is the number on the back of the MPEM that starts with 27800_ _ _ _?
4. what gauges are on the hood?
5. Is the lanyard safety switch non-dess or dess?

i think i got what you were talking about...
1. is the motor number is 409613.... bore: 2x76mm, stroke 64mm, capac: 5807c.c type 587
2. the last 2 number is 97
3.the number of the mpem is 826
4.gauge on the jet ski.jpg

1. motor is a 587cc engine
2. hull was mfg in 1997
3. OK, I think you should also post pic, as 826 is unremarkable : http://www.seadoosource.com/mpemref.html
4. costistent with a gsi or GS model
5. post pic of switch on consul

Identifying the electrical system is key, as a '95 587 motor can be run by '97 720 electronics (same stator/flywheel set).
6. is this single or dual carbed?

Yep sounds like you got a 587 motor when its supposed to have a 717 motor, but if it runs and rides and you enjoy it then no big deal I guess. As for the lanyard, I think its a dess lanyard judging by the contact on the inside of the lanyard cap. If it is dess, then the new one will need to be programmed to the ski. Good luck

Nice. 97 was a good year for the GSI. "The GS is the base model with pretty much no features with only a fuel gauge and no trim while the GSI and GSX have the digital infocenter and electric trim."

Info center+717=GSI

You have a homogenization that put someone back on the water. You are probably running a 717 carb and pipe on the smaller 587 engine. (everything should bolt up right?) Get the 717 rebuilt, sell the 587 to recoup the money and you'll have a nice ski.
