Just shopping where is the best place to get a wear ring? Are aftermarket ones decent. Also I have seen some stainless steel ones, are these good or bad? I guess if the impeller hits it your done, but if not it would hold up longer?

I get mine from SBT (right up the rode from me). You should use a "wear" ring, as its name implies. Michigan has lotsa rocks. Suggest you pull
the pump, take it to a shop. The tools would cost more or same than what they charge. Borrow their engine alignment tool. DIY re-install.

I have always used the black rubber original style, Parker Yamaha used to carry them. It doesnt take any special tool other than an impeller tool to do the job. Take the pump off, remove impeller, hacksaw, sawzall, or jigsaw cut the old ring in two places and it should come out. Be careful not to cut into the pump housing (aluminum or plastic), if you do a little JB weld sanded smooth will be an easy fix. Place the new wear ring in the freezer overnight and it will drop right into the pump. You will not need to an engine alignement tool, there is not any adjustment at the pump.
