Yep it was shot. I believe its a regulator rectifier I got a rectifier from the local electronics shop

bit of an update. charging issue fixed even after I broke a stator wire DOHHH. warm start Is much better and my new battery is great. How ever when I got to the ramp yesterday it didn't want to keep running. but it was fine out of the water after some time I got it to run but it was loaded up and would rev etc etc. after a while I went to pop the plugs out nd the mag one was hot as hell then I remembered a vid I watched of a ski with a air leak in the crank case again I put 2 and 2 together when I got home and realised I used the wrong sealant on the case. so out with the engine and quick strip and clean done. all back together now jst waiting some time to test it

Gland you caught the air leak, it must've been running fast due to being lean of fuel.

I guess you only need a rectifier, thus the system stator is low power and doesn't charge the battery rapidly, the battery provides the voltage regulation in that case like many other small engines.

That is, unless you notice the battery is being overcharged while running and the voltage rises too high (unlikely, I think).
