water leaking through hull at pump shaft on 93 spi

the leak started small and got worse and worse. it now gushes in. my bilge pump can barely keep up with it. im new to the forum and to the seadoo world up till bout july 25th of this year. nothin but problems so far, but its really not out of the realm of what i expected from the boats being the age they are. i am a diesel mechanic, so i am handy and have tools. i am thinkin it is one of the seals, or the through hull fitting for the shaft? i was ridin the ski, had good power, then i heard somethin give and i lost all thrust. high rpm s with no/barely any movement. took off seat and water was rushin in through that "hose" that has the two clamps on it and its around the shaft???

any info is greatly appreciated. dont want to just throw parts at it.

Sounds like you need to rebuild the drive shaft seal.

When they leak... water comes in... and air gets sucked in to the pump, and you loose thrust.

You should feel lucky that it failed in the way you described. Normally, the roller bearing in side of it seizes while you are riding round. Then, it rips the boot, or breaks the fitting in the hull that it's clamped to... and the ski sinks. (quickly) That's why the changed to a Carbon seal. They don't last as long... but they almost never have a catastrophic failure.

one more thing......

i know that ur making an educated guess at this point, and that its from what i tell you, but its really all i have to go by at this point. im tryin to get her back on the water one more time this year. so....in your opinion, based on what you know. what should i get (part wise), to solve this? ive already looked all through the diagrams of the drive unit and can referrence the manual at any point , so i am familiar with it in that way. ur guess on what i should get would be greatly appreciated. also, what is this carbon seal, and what did it replace?

Order the 2 seals, and the roller bearing in the seal pack. Also, get a new neoprene seal for the pump housing. (it's a good idea to change it whenever you remove the pump to make sure you get a good seal) It's not a hard job. It should take you an hour or two.


As you said, yes... it's just a guess from what you are telling me.

You could have a leak from the cooling system, or back feeding from the balers. And the cavitation can be from a messed up impeller or wear ring... or an air leak around the ride shoe.

BUT... a bad drive shaft seal will cause both problems you are describing. Nit to mention... the seals don't live forever. Chances are... if you rebuild the seal... and make sure everything is sealed when you re assemble the pump... you will fix the problem.

hey thanks alot guys. you know, this is kinda crazy. the day before of this incindent, i installed bilge pumps on both of my ski s. well, come to find out, the bearing did sieze to the shaft and it did rip the shaft protection hose. i was in the middle of the lake when it occured. if not for the bilge, this ski was a goner. i limped back to the ramp with the bilge pumping the whole time. still barely made it. thanks alot all.
