water flow control valve

I developed a minor water leak inside the hull which I traced to a pinhole in the bellows in the water flow control valve on the muffler. The thing that confused me is that there were 3 washers on top of the exhaust valve to increase tension of the spring. Manal says the valves comes pre-adjusted from the factory. Is it possible the factory would have put the washers in or I'm assuming it was more likely done by the previous owner. I took the washers out and adjusted spring tension per manual - run red cap all the way in then back out 3 turns (which brings it just above flush with the housing). There had to be a reason the washers were there, how do I tell if the valve is working correctly?

Washers....

Yes, those washers need to be put back in. This is the tension that was determined what was needed to keep from closing off the injection at the tuned pipe to early.

Mine has the same configuration. I don't know if it was done by a mechanic at some point, when the boat was new (1997 Challenger) or if it was from the factory. I have just bought a new one and will be installing it. It does not have the washers in it.:cheers:

great, thanks for the reply. I couldn't believe when I looked up the price of the bellows ($35). I put Permatex sealant on the pin hole and will give that a try first before I spend the $35 on a piece of rubber.
