I just picked up a set of ocean pro flame arrestors and spare set of carbs. I want to do some testing for my own knowledge on the benefits (if any) of using these with no other mods. I am going to rejet the spare carbs for these f/a and do some testing with the stock set up and then switch to the open f/a setup with rejettrd carbs and record my data on the two. So, what jetting are you guys running for these open f/a on a stock 96 XP?

Thanks

I am interested in what you find out, I would really like the FA's just to make it easier to adjust the carbs.

in my experience, and everyone has there own opinion here so i'm sure someone else is going to think differently, if you're sticking with a stock motor, the stock fa flows plenty of air. and also is dang near water proof. you loose that when going to an aftermarket fa. do they offer less restriction? yes. but unless you're adding mods where you need the less restriction, its not worth the added risk of water ingestion.

now if you where to throw a pipe on that motor, port your cases, mill your head, ported stock or aftermarket intake, etc. then yes it's time for an aftermarket fa. by itself however, i doubt you're not going to really see much,if any, difference.

I've always heard that they do nothing without other mods but never seen any data, hence why I am going to try this out under the same conditions with each set up. In going to make several runs with each set on the same day same water conditions and see what the numbers show

Cant wait to see what you find out on installing these, im in the same boat as well. just waiting for fa's to be delivered.

You can get away on the highs with just opening the needles up a little bit(I would start with half a turn from closed). It's a new bog down low that the fa's will create that you will have to change jetting to overcome. I would just up the lows from 70's to 75's

Let the testing begin

This year I added an APE pipe and westcoast FA. It was on 95 xp 720 though. I swear it got a lot more now. But that could be from pipe. Subscribed. Interested in results!

A pipe, a/m rev limiter, and f/a will REALLY wake a 717 up. Night and day.
I'm interested in what, if any, gains will be had will f/a only

what was the outcome of theses? did they help any? i see you have a set for sale? did this setup work that bad?

You can just remove the air box and leave the stock flame arrestor in, and it will run well. I added some outwear material to the outside to try and prevent water ingestion.

i was afraid of that, but of course the company who sold me jets, fa's etc claimed different  although i have other mods done so maybe there will be a difference. plan to get the ski out this weekend and see how it runs.

the stock box flows plenty of air until you really start modding. basically its the high rpms that are added with am pipes when you need more air.
