What brand of VHF radio is good to put in your boat? Is more expensive better or cheap ones just as good, considering the amount of use they get?

Check out the local boat supply companies and chose the one with the features that you need most. If your just in local lakes, a hand held should work fine. You won't need a add on antenna either.

Thanks, but are any particular brands better then others? Buying the boat this weekend and I should get one of these before I get on the lake, due to having kids and all

I find that moy cel phone still works on all the lakes I visit. I would go with the radio if I was going on the ocean or one of the great lakes, but other than that a phone still works most the time. Just to make it easy, I would go handheld like Karl suggested.

There are a lot of different VHF radios on the market. Ranging from $59.00 to as high as $1200.00. Just go the like West Marine, if you have one there, or on line and see what they have to offer. The sales man will point you in the right direction. A hand held will work fine along with your cell phone for lake use. When I run the Inter coastal Waterways, I don't bother bring a VHF radio... My cell phone is quicker and costs me no more than everyday use. I only use VHF if I can't see the shore line in the Gulf on my 26" dive boat, but then I'm about 50 - 100 miles off shore diving...the cell phone is useless there.
