Hi all, anyone know if it is a bad practice to use an impact gun to remove (not install- must be torqued to spec.) the flywheel nut on a 717.

It makes it go a lot quicker if you have a power tool, otherwise you have to make this power yourself or have a couple people helping pull/push, I have heard many beachside mechanics jam the motor under the trailer hitch with wooden blocks but I imagine these are the guys who give you back your boat with half the sensors broken off and brackets bent just enough to get the screws back in.

Man that sounds like some horror story out of a butcher shop. I guess if you are stranded somewhere you gotta Doo what ya gotta Doo. LOL

Thanks for the info, I kinda figured it would be ok . Just wanted to check with the pros first. This is my first Doo and plan on dooing all the work myself. I enjoy the work and can't wait to get it running. Heck, i've never even ridden one for that matter.
I'm swapping out the engine and putting an earlier model 717 that came as an extra engine with the deal into the boat cause the engine that came with the boat had a rod knock. I'm changing the mag housing assy. on two counts. 1.) the previous owner of the engine that is going back in said the mags were bad and 2.) I 'm using the later housing cause it uses the later design mounts attached to the mag housing rather than using the old under the block cradle mount sys. I think it's a much cleaner install. Wouldn't you agree?

i used a impact on a 787 with no problems, that is i only used it to take it off. put it back on with a torque wrench 107ftlbs

NO!!!!! Did it once on a Honda and the jerking of the nut sheered the nut off and the crank was junk.

Then there was already issues with the crank.

I use air power when needed, and I almost always use it to disassemble things. It makes the tear-down go very quick.

its probably not recommended but yes the impact will take off your flywheel if you dont have the correct puller. ive done it for years with no problems.
