Tiny Tach TT2A problems...how is yours wired??

-Kind of surprised i'm having trouble with mine. I have been in contact with the manufacturer and he had some great suggestions.

-Bought a Tiny Tach TT2A to find out where my max rpms were on my 96' XP. It works great for about 15 mins then the rpms go up to 13k-18k its as if this tach is picking up interference or "noise" from something in ski and driving the signal crazy. I do have it set at 180 degrees setting, and I have tried the other settings. I do have a clean solid ground to block with the white ground wire, and I checked continuity from ground to ground and its good. We did discuss that the ignition system does fire both cylinders at same time on these 2 stroke skis, and it doesn't matter which spark plug wire you connect to either cylinder.

-Initially I had the red signal wire wrapped 6 times around the MAG cylinder spark plug wire. Took it out, was fine. Idle in water at 1560-1600 rpms. Rode around then it acted up. Brought it back to dock, undid my nice electrical tape and tie wrapping job :( lol. took 2 turns of wrap off and made it 4. It did it again. Went back to lake next day and now i'm all the way down to 1 wrap of the red signal wire around the spark plug wire and its still doing it :ack:

-These tachs have been on sea doos since early to mid 1990s. I know i'm not the first one to run into problems but after much searching i'm finding some discussions on it but no solid answers.

-I am curious how others have theirs wired?

-The manufacturer has stated that I need to wrap the solid core red signal wire around both spark plug wires, and to start my wrap where the red signal wire comes out of the heat shrink. It is pretty long, so he stated to wrap it 1-2 times around both spark plug wires, and then trim excess inches and wrap a couple turns around itself at the heat shrink tubing sort of like a neuse. He said that me having that long red signal wire out in the open that it is causing it to pick up unwanted interference. I am going to try those suggestions this weekend.

-I will get some pictures up here soon.

-Thanks,
Rob

Sounds like you got a dud. I wrap all the red wire then tape or shrinkwrap it down. Wrapped like 10 times. No issues.

I use TTO tachs.

Same here, never a problem. I just make a few turns around the front plug wire and almost never even connect the ground because I move it from ski to ski for tuning purposes. There is no need to go around both plug wires as they always spark together. I think you got a bad one and they need to replace it. Only other place to look is your spark plugs. You are running BR8ES plugs the R=resistor and could cause some electrical "noise" without it.

I am running the BR8ES NGK plugs.

I wonder what the heck is going on. Its such a simple little device. Ugh.

I will try it with ground off.

I'll give it one more shot at lake this weekend with the adjustments I just made.

Does the signal wire run near the magneto, or magneto wiring? I'm guessing that could interfere.

Looks more involved than I do. I just corkscrew the red wire around the plug wire a few times and it works great. I still think you got a bad one.

Shouldn't you wrap the red wire around the spark plug wire right near the BOOT of the spark plug wire (basically as close to the spark plug as possible, but still on the wire)?

Based on what I see there in your photos, that wire is probably picking up pulses from both of the spark plugs wires at the same time, causing the RPM's to effectively "double". I would try moving the wire to right near the boot of one or the other spark plugs. Like others have said, shouldn't matter which wire you use, but I would make sure where you wrap the wire, you are no where near the other spark plug wire for interference reasons.

If that's where you originally had it installed and are just trying this as a last ditch effort, please ignore my comment!

Yeah, the pictures are how it is now after the suggestions from manufacturer. These sea doo ignition systems fire both cylinders at the same time so wrapping around both it is seeing same signal.

I originally had it wrapped close to boot on MAG cylinder spark plug wire and very cleanly grounded.

I figured that was the case, but wanted to double-check. I agree with the others then at that point, that your TTO is probably a bad unit.

I run my Trail Tech TTO wire all the way back near my rear electrical box. It was an easier way for me to manage the wires and keep things tidy. I just pull off a plug boot. wrap the tach lead around the plug wire and cover with heat shrink. Nice and clean.

-Im taking it to lake saturday am. If I cant get it working well I will try and return it.

1983, Not sure, but I'm wondering if wrapping the red wire back around itself is the problem.

Here's my install:

Signal:

Can't see everything for the tubing, but you can see the excess. Got about 3 wraps.

Ground:

Install:

About 12 hrs on the install, no problems so far :hurray:

Lake Sailor those pictures are of how it is wrapped now after being advised to do it like that from manufacturer. I am going to lake tomorrow to test out the different way I have it wrapped now.

Before I had 3 wraps around the MAG cylinder wire, but I had a lot of exposed red signal wire. I was using the very end of the red wire to make the wraps. Tiny Tach guy said that was one of the issues. I need to start my wrap close to where it exits the heat shrink as to not have exposed red wire hanging out in open and then trim excess. Will advise tomorrow if this fixes it.

Thanks for pics!

Rob

Sure, good luck w/ it. I'm pretty much done for the season I'm afraid. Not counting a few repairs over the winter, of course :)

Well it performed perfect today no crazy readings after adjusting the way it's wired as per pics above.

But did see the most amount of boat ramp disasters LOL, I'm surprised there aren't more people hurt on the lakes. One guy forgot to hook his boat on trailer after loading it and then pulling up ramp and well you know..... boat fell off trailer and on ramp. He pushed boat back down ramp with trailer and reloaded:facepalm:

1983, glad you got 'er working. All's well that ends well :)

Boat ramps faux pas, last summer one of the camp hosts where I usually go was loading his pontoon boat solo, banged the trailer, knocked the truck outa gear, guess what happened next, yeah, sunk it. Fairly new truck, too.

Druther drop the boat off the trailer I think.
