I`m replacing the carbon seal/carrier seal.Noticed my 97 challenger[single]doesn`t have a thru hull fitting like the one sbt sells.Mine appears to be a black peice of pvc running thru that boot clamp on.Is that normal or do I order the one pictured and seal it in?Pvc has a large dia. doesn`t seem to me that it needs to be that big of inner dia,for cav. purposes.

you need to cut off the black "PVC" flush, then insert with cement, make sure it is lined up straight with PTO when cementing in

I think its ok to Doc.,the carbon ring was dragging on shaft, almost made a horse shoe out of it.Yesterday we went way south on the lake.Turned to go back and instant cav. thought the splines spun. I just removed pto no signs of bad splines on any of contact areas[removed pto with impel. tool]I hadn`t got to the carbon seal yet this is our 3rd season with boat, just didn`t leak.Shaft has a little rub but not in carrier area. That thru hull might have been repaired by Karl the guy I bought boat from across lake.Clean repair just different then I thought it would be,if not original. Thanks

repeating misaligned carbon seal/carrier

Made it to lake with new driveline kit installed, never ran better. The driveshaft was quit, before the carbon seal was rubbing on it and noisy.THAT WAS until I was ready to leave cranked the boat around to load. That same noise had returned got it home and carbonseal/carrier face was misaligned like before. Now I had the new boot compressed all the way back to the third notch[rubber ring in 3rd groove[aft] on shaft]and the boot is flush at rear to fiberglass over thru hull. Thru-hull is black pvc and looks like the shaft protecter had been removed on pumpside. I thought about repositioning the accordian boot and pull bottom side out a notch to compensate for shaft angle going to pto, then retighten clamp, has about 1.5 inches of thruhull sticking out to play with.Or replace thru hull or go retro?

reposition

Thats what I'd do. The Factory may not have installed the thru-hull properly.
Just keep the seal from rubbing the shaft.
