If the engine is running fine, could be impeller or wear ring damage.

Changes in ambient temperature, humidity, and operating weight will effect a jet ski's top speed in the same water and wind conditions. Top speed of a Fish Pro 170 is published at 88kph per GPS, jet ski speedometers generally read high, hmmm.

“The GPS in the dash of the ski's since 2009 does have a very accurate GPS to 1 decimal place. My Motec M130 logs this speed straight from the SeaDoo CAN bus and is consistently within 0.1 of my Garmin GPS.

BUT, What is interesting is that the dash LIES to you and rounds UP 0.5 to 1.5 MPH consistently on the dash! Why does BRP/SeaDoo do this? Who knows….. the faster you go the worse it gets. i.e., 83.something on the Garmin and M130 log will indicate 85 mph on the dash every time.

This is why most guys simply display RPM on the display and use a handheld GPS for accurate speeds……..go figure.”

It’s all about software and calibration. GPS uses triangulation to calculate location, triangulation data is extremely accurate but the software program to convert it to speed is written by the manufacturer.

Interesting, checked skis several times just using my phone gps and always seemed to be accurate.

I have a similar thing happening.
During the run in period I was hitting the high 80’s Kph but since the first service the top speed as dropped, and a new wear ring and impeller at 12 mths, and last trip out I couldn’t even get 80kph.

It regularly has new oil, plugs and filter done at home. (Impeller done by dealer). A new battery is fitted.

I am wondering if there is something that needs to be set or calibrated with a scantool that is affecting top speed.

This sounds more like something went wrong during the first service, especially since the wear ring and impeller are both critical parts of the puzzle for obtaining published speeds.

The impeller and wear ring were changed some time after the first service due to sucking up an oyster bed.

Check your oil level. If it is on the full mark, you may lose just a little bit of speed. Half way between the marks for where it should be.
