Testing the coil

Is there a way to test the ignition coil. It seems I now have no fire to the plugs. All I have been using is my test light. The two wires that go to the coil are white/green and black. When I test the white wire to ground while cranking the engine I get a week light. When I do the same with the black I get nothing. I am starting to like canoes.

what you can do, is unplug the white wire to it, and with a 12v light tester, clip the alligator to the - post, and probe the wire while hit'n the start button. If it lights/flickers, then you know you got power to it, and if no spark, then coil bad...

A little confused, like that's a shock. I unhook the white wire, hook the clip from my light to the spark plug pole and stick the probe into the coil or the white wire?
