Testing for a bad DESS Post?

I start the MPEM advanced diagnostic and I get the one short and one long beep, I connect the lanyard and I get two beeps to tell me it cannot read the lanyard. I start the test over again but this time I add pressure to the lanyard and the engine starts to say everything is OK. I get the same result with two different lanyards.

If I just put the lanyard on the post I get two beeps and the engines start. I am trying to diagnose an intermittent ignition problem. I was thinking I had a bad MPEM but now I am hoping it could be a bad DESS post.

Could a bad DESS Post cause an intermittent ignition problem?

there is a magnet inside your lanyard .that closes a reed switch inside the post. that supplies 12v to mpem. that allows the mpem to read the lanyard(via ring and center contact) . if your reed switch has dirty contacts you will definitely have issues (it disrupts the power to mpem) i actually had one boat that would cut out at the worst times i put a little neodymium magnet in the lanyard. if the connections to the ring or center contact are dirty or loose boat wont start. but will contiue running once started. there is a detailed testing procedure posted on seadoo forum dont remember where.
hope this helps

I was doing some research and I saw where you cut a hole in an MPEM and re-soldered a connection, very impressive!

I have cleaned the DESS post, but I am hoping it could be a similar situation to what you were experiencing with the post sending strange signals to the MPEM.

I am contacting Nick at Westside Powersports to order a used OEM DESS post.
