TDC gauge

Just buy a cheap dial indicator from Harbor Freight and drop it down the spark plug hole.

You will also have to secure the other end of the dial indicator base or clamp to a rigid location so it can't move around. :D:D That is always the difficult part... finding something to mount the indicator to. I'm sure I get it pretty close to TDC with a screw driver sticking into the spark plug hole but I'm to anal. Even then you have a couple degrees of dwell at the top when reading the dial indicator that you need to split. I dunno how we get these skis running properly ?

In case there are any snowflakes on the board, I am joking around. :D

Maybe I'm just lucky, the old one I have drops in and the gauge bezel sits on the head shell and the tip rests on the piston. Nothing else needed and no securing or clamping. I don't even set the dial, just watch until the needle stops moving and starts moving again.

In my typical old Skool ways, I just insert a 3/8 in 6 inch extension, and rock the pto back and forth by hand, till I find that small flat spot, where the extension does not move, and this is tdc. If you are just setting rotary valve timing, this method has never failed me.
