hi
/i have a 98 sportster 1800 and we accidently sucked up a tow rope last night and it got wrapped around the shaft pretty good. was able to get it off pretty easily, but I noticed a small plastic blue piece broken where the seal is. I checked the other shaft and it has a cylindrical cover over the shaft. the engine in question does not. I'm not sure what the blue plastic piece is as I can't see it on the other engine, but part of it broke off. it appears to be a part that goes bewteen the shaft and the rubber seal. so, there is a possibility of some leakage there.

my question is, is it necessary to have it replaced? will water leak into the engine or hull?

the motor turns over fine now so I appear to have got all the rope off.

today is going to be the nicest day we've had in the last 2 weeks I've been on vacation so I'd rather be out on the water than in the shop... can anyone offer some guidance?

I can take a pic to help explain i didn't explain well enough

thanks in advance!

b.

blue plastic bit is just a cover for the shaft its not needed and the boat will run better without it!

thanks!
i just read that its not a seal and that the seal is actually inside... so there should be no water getting in even if there is space around where the drive shaft enters the boat?

i would just jet the boat in the water and see if any water is getting in

if it is take it out and replace the seals
ill look for some pics for you showing the set up

also i have tested mine by putting plugs in filling the hull with water (tilt boat so water fills around the shaft erea not the engine)to see if any comes out of the erea .
do not fill to the engine just underside of it

you can see how long the shaft protector is !
my guess is you have done no damage
i sucked up a rope pretty bad before now took me ages to get it out but it done no damage
btw item numbers 7 and 10 are the seals

I think the part I'm talking about is #14. I assume that this end is where it enters the boat?

it might actually be #7. its hard to tell without knowing where the boat connects in teh picture... all I know it that it's blue and it's wrapped around the shaft where it comes out of the hull. half is broke off and the other half is still on the boat. should I remove the part from the boat?

itl be fine without it!

lol,ok then!
must have really got chewed up. funny i didn't find any pieces of plastic in the rope. might have been broken off before...

I feel better now, I'll take it out a bit later

thanks for the help guys.

and I just realized that I spelled ROPE in the subject line as ROAP...wtf was I thinking...lol

also, after reading so many posts on here about people who had the same thing happen, I think I need to appologize to my wife. she was the one driving the boat. :(

no problem!
a freind of mine done mine when i was in a ringo ...it must have pulled me like 0-60 in 1.2 seconds
but im very carefull with the ski rope and since ive had the tower the rope stays farther out much easyer to see
when you go out leave your engine compartment open for 10 minutes so you can check ur not takeing on any water ...just for piece of mind

Wife boating lessons....

My wife drove great except for one issue....didn't suck the rope up, but with me and 2 others on the tube, she got too much slack in the rope, kept going and I thought the tube would be ripped from under us.....nope, ripped the harness right off the tube, rope bungeed back to the boat and caught her across the face with a rope burn!!! Yikes.....A little burn, she was fine, but very cautious on slack now......but she is a trooper and still loves wiping me off the tube!

^hahaha

thing is, i have a tower and you're right, it does stay far from the boat. but she's only driven it a few times and never had to tow me. we have a few other people in the boat so she was nervous and never thought to look at the rope. it sucked up the road when she tried to start the engines. she didn't even run over it... oh well. she learned. thing is, I probably will never have her tow me again. unfortunate is that I bought the boat to wakeboard and i spend most of the time towing other people becuase no one else can drive. I probably like wakeboarding more than anyone (and am better than everyone I go with)... so sucks to be me
