Stator/Ignition Timing question/verification

Hello all,

Someone called me about a 94 GTX - said ski was running fine then they stopped for lunch and came back and could not start it again... they brought it home and started T/Shooting - they thought the problem was electrical and traced it to a bad stator based on the Shop Manual they had for ski and replaced it - now they can not get it to run....

Individual swapped out stator and said they can get it to turn over like it wants to start but never catches. I asked him if he set the marks correctly between the case and new stator ..... Could not find /know there were any marks to line up - so he set it up based on where he thought the screws were mounted on old stator as reference point.

Just want to verify that I am correct in my thinking here and explanation to individual ... Even with the stator all the way retarded or advanced the motor should start and run (just not very well)... all other things being correct (fuel/battery/carbs/rotary valve etc...) told him he may have something else going than just stator....

thanks for assistance/comments

I recently change a stator plate on same type engine and couldn't find timing marks. they are at approx. 9 oclock position but I set them so screw was in middle of slot and it was fine.

It should be OK, I would be concentrating on fuel. Normally stators just dont fail at the dock. Usually its due to a short or jump starting the ski/reversing the terminals.

Verify Spark, Fuel, and compression. (and timing-Rotary valve)

Thanks for input - that is what i thought that even with stator out of timing - it should at least run ....

I have not seen ski - He has not stopped by yet - though I did find out that he has existing grey fuel lines and mentioned to him that that may be a bigger source of problems and the fuel selector/carbs - will see it tomorrow...
