Starting mystery?

I have a 1996 GSX that will beep twice and turn over but will not fire up unless I attach a emergency battery jump starter or a battery charger to the cables. Could it be that the battery is strong enought to turn it over but does not have enough amps/volts to supply the coil for starting?

try new battery and/or inspect the grounds and leads.
