Does this look like a OEM starter. It has the ND stamped on the bendix, but it is painted black. I'd like to rebuild it but not going to bother if its an aftermarket
Mine was white on my 1996 GTX so I bet it is aftermarket. My white one went bad and I ordered a rebuild kit but I haven't rebuilt it yet. I put a black one like that from a 96 XP parts ski on it (guessing aftermarket also) about mid season and haven't had a problem with it.
Hard to tell. The bendix is a Nippon Denso. Most of the aftermarket ones have to have the rear cover ground down or they crack the rear bracket. Yours could be OEM replacement and not AM junk.
