I recently imported a STARR trailer into ontario from Michigan.
I'm getting screwed over now by RIV because there is no VIN plate on the trailer and the vin on the ownership is "illegal/invalid" in north america.
Funny how in MI they never noticed that when it was registered.

Anyhow, I've searched google till the end and back and cannot find anything about STARR trailer company.
Thats the only thing on the trailer.
If anybody can help me out at all it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Chris

well i live in ontario, and as far as I know you should be able to register as a "home built" trailer....don't need a VIN, I think they maybe give you a number to use or it is just called a "custom" trailer

how many trailers you see using a pickup bed, they do not have VIN's

:agree:, I build'm when I need them, so, here in U.S., just bring receipts of parts...wheels, metal..etc, whatever you got lay'n around/metal shop...and gofrom there as "home-built". They'll issue a new number.

So, with your trailer, do the same, maybe scratch metal up, grind down any #'s, then coat it with fresh paint, and go from there.

I've already thought of that.

#1 if you import a trailer you cannot claim after that is custom built.
Only person who could do that is the original owner moving across borders into canada.
If your a canadian resident your f---ed.
I need to somehow track down the manufacture and get them to re-issue me a new VIN.

IS this trailer, "labeled" to your DMV, in your name, waiting for "right" docs, or is it just "there", but you need to register it.

What about, finding some P.O.S. trailer, with current reg/title/plate, and purchasing it, then throw that plate on the STARR, and cut the crappy one up?

all of those suggestions dont really work.

If I had the trailer smuggled in that would work fine.
My problem is not how to get a plate for the trailer, but how to get the RIV off my back for importing an illegal trailer with no VIN. If the Border services guys had been on point and had a clue they would have noticed when I brought it over that it had no VIN tag, but since they were not too bright they didnt even check for anything. So i was able to drive it over.

Now RIV is saying, you cant import a trailer then say that its home made. Only an american moving into canada could do that.
I need the manufacturer's help on this one, only way out. I wasted my time already arguing with RIV about this. Its stupid no doubt but they said i'd have to export the trailer. I'm like what so just drop it on the other side of the border? That makes no sense its a perfectly street legal mint trailer. I'm like take my $200 and sftu. LOL

anyhow.

I seriously have no idea.
Its the only marking on the Trailer a big sticker along the side that says STARR.

??
Its all I really have to go on and it what is on the registration I got.

Unless somebody can look up the vin on the papers I have i have no idea.

more gov't bull $hit... it's not about the trailer or helping you, it's about them wanting your money... just take the plate from another trailer.

Ya I've since figured out an easy solution.
Just go register as a custom built trailer. They hand you plates and presto!

I had a buddy with a very similar issue.
In the end, removed all identification and then painted the trailer.
He then reported that he bought it and was told it was a home built trailer. They then issued him a registration...
