It appears that some screw fairy (no offense to the gays) has invaded my garage and keeps taking off with my bolts almost every time I lay them on the work bench.

Whatever, or whoever, I have a question.

I've noticed that many of the bolts that screw into the engine have a 1/4" shoulder below the flange.

My local dealer has not had any in stock, so I've been travelling from town to town picking up replacements.

Today, as I was about to attach the exhaust manifold (EM) to the engine, as I looked at my other Doo to see where everyting goes, I noticed the bolt to that EM was missing.

Fortunately, the bolt fairy did not snatch that bolt, however, I noticed that like other bolts, that one also has a shoulder, though there is no flange.

My question fro the day is can I safely use any SS bolt that would fit on not fret about it not having a shoulder?

Well, we can't accuse you of not being sensitive to other members.

But, yes... you can use any SS bolt that will fit. The shoulder is to add a little strength, but on the exhaust, you aren't making them that tight.

My problem is the exact opposite. I always end up with two or three bolts left over, and I have a toolbox drawer full of them.

Maybe your fairies are dropping them off in my box?

Send them bolts to me. The boyz at the local SD dealer wanted to charge me $2.50 a screw for the three Allen ones that secure that stator and 7 that secure the housing. Call me "cheap," but I said no to that and found a local screw store that sold them for .45 cents a piece. They were a tad longer than the originals, however, my grinder took care of that problem in 15 minutes.

It is scary when you end up with more screws than you started with, waiting for something to fall off. Been in that situation myself.

I have disassembled a couple of engines and sold parts off of them, and kept all the fasteners.

I also get that extra screw leftover every now and then.

If you need any pm me and maybe we can work something out. I have approx 2 engines worth of them laying around.

Monkey-Man: Thanks for the assist. The local SD shop actually had a few of the bolts I was looking for after trying to sell me one for that I could purchase at Home Depot for 1/3 the price.

Since I only needed one, there was no need to complain about the exhorbent price.

Again, thanks. I will keep your e-mail handy should I again begin a engine tear-down project. Next time, the screws and bolts go in clear baggies.
