speedometer issue

my 96 xp 800 has an issue with the speedo i can't figure out. sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. i can be riding and it might or might not come on. i checked all the connections and everything seems in order. the gas/oil gauge works fine though. any ideas?

My did this before it stopped working completely. Although, this year it started working again every now and then. The little coverter that converts the sensor to an electrical signal is known to go bad. General consensus on this forum is the replacement cost is not worth it since they are not that accurate anyways.

the speedometers are iffy. Whenever i go in shallow water mine stops working on my speedster 150. on my friends jet ski his totally stopped working after we beached it for half an hour.
