Spark plug keeps getting fouled by too much oil

Every year when I start up my boat for the first time of the season, I have to remove one (just one) of my spark plugs and blow out alot of excess oil by pressing the start several times. After it's gone, it works like a champ other than smoking profusely for several minutes. Would it be a leak in a piston ring?

Please help!

Hi,

Could be a couple of things, crank seals, rings. Check the compression, if the compression is O.K., like, 135 to 150 psi, I really wouldn't worry about it. Even below 135 is O.K. for a while, when you get 120-125 its probably time for an upper end rebuild.

Anyway if you have good compression and if its only once a year, just clamp off the main oil line when you winterize your ski, or just plan on wasting one spark plug when you start it in the spring. All skis smoke profusely the first time they are started in the spring. Just be sure there are no tree huggers around when you start it.

It's kind of normal for a seadoo with some miles. The oil is getting past the rotary valve seal when it sits. The only way to fix it is to replace the crank, and the center seals. If after the first run... it stays clear... then don't worry about it. If it refills with oil in a sort time... then you may want to think about a rebuild.
