hey also im looking for a wear ring for my 95 xp and SBT calls for a 139.5 wear ring but check this one out do you think that it will work just fine?? has anyone ever dealt with them before..

Not sure how recommending basic boating safety is a sign that I don't have the "character to think before I speak."

I guess I should be more mature and not check to make sure I have standard safety/emergency gear before heading out into 4ft-6ft waves. Looks like I've got a lot to learn.

That way when I'm out on the water and see your broken down ass I won't have a line to pull you in with or extra gas can I can go fill up or radio/cell phone to call in help for you! Oh, I'll forget to bring a flashlight so I can even look for you in the dark too!

Thanks for the tips.

And yes, if I heard this story in person I would call you an idiot. I don't use that language lightly, but not taking simple steps that could some day help save your life? Yea, that's idiotic.

Yea I just got a set of impellers and the tool from SBT a few weeks ago, Shipping was fast and it worked out great. Get an OEM wear ring, No exceptions. I was able to pick mine up for 50 a piece from motor city powersports and they had a ton of them in stock because wear rings sell fast when the season starts.

Lamb your not going to get respect from any of these guys being a new member and coming in here insulting people. It shows your inmaturity regardless if your right or not. Troll on sir!

Brock, glad you're okay...those hours out there had to seem like forever. I'm sure you know that some of the things mentioned to carry for safety are required by law...should the law ever stop you you'll want to have 'em. Anyway, the important thing is that things turned out well...thanks for sharing your story.

JoeStrange...very cool avatar!

Thanks Murph! What exactly is required by law in Michigan on a PWC? Anyone know or have a link?

I want to mount a cell phone charger under the hood, Like one of the 12 volt car lighter plugs. Is there any implications to doing that? With todays technology that would give you a phone, GPS, flashlight and angry birds all in one! :D Well you won't be playing angry birds while your waiting to be rescued if its 4 - 6ft.

Oh and also theres a cheap way to to use a pre paid cell phone with accutracking.com as a permanite GPS tracking solution. I did this with a very expensive car I built in case it got stolen. It gives people a way to track you and also gives you a way to track the skis should anything ever happen. Just a thought.

You could always do like my buddy pirate steve did off the coast of long beach California and light your boat on fire as a signal lol

New York has requirements for basic safety equipment; fire extinguisher, whistle, orange distress flag. We carry extra things like cell phones, tow ropes, and maybe a beer or two. We ride in fairly calm water, but never , never ride alone! Hope this entire episode taught you a lesson!

well...not really im going out again tonite in about a half hour....there is noone to go with me this time either...ill be fine im going to fill her up and have a blast... im takin a cell this time though

I think you missed their point. You lack character because you jumped down his throat right away without being provoked. Their point is you could have said what he did was idiotic and not call him names. I'm all for boater saftey and agree he was wrong but I didn't smash him for the idiotic thing he did. He KNOWS what he did was stupid and he doesn't need someone on a forum he doesn't know acting like that. We come to this forum for info and conversations not to be talk to like a 5 year old.

OCOD, remember my post? wow, brock took the cake though!, thanks for sharing your story!

I had a crazy story like that too, but I believe yours was worse, stranded in the dark water for 7 hours??? wow, I was chitting it and was stuck out in the water less than an hour!!! at 3 in the afternoon it was beautiful (at the colorado river though, I was going downstream).

And Brock is right:
#1 when I was screaming for help no one could hear me, the water and the sounds of peoples engines muted my screams....
#2 The XP IS TERRIBLE TO GET BACK ON! lol, thats why Im selling it

After my encounter, I was very hesitant and scared to get back on the water, after reading your post, I need to go out and get all the emergency aids I need, usually I carry a cell on my boat, but not on the ski (I should!). I know you guys are going to laugh at me, but I think Im going to have to carry this whenever I go out to a bigger lake (like Lake Mead): A Seadoo Scooter!

http://www.seadooseascooter.com/vsplus.html

Besides having all the emergency gear, and though I am getting really good at fixing my boat and XP, things can happen, and that seadoo scooter fits in my storage compartment (make sure I charge it up before I go out on the lake)...

I can tow my own boat, and tow my own xp! what do you guys think?

While I don't plan on going out into the ocean, reading this thread makes me really glad I have purchased the gear if I need it. I got a VHF marine radio, flashlight, Storm whistle all on board with me as well as my GPS.

My fuel gauge doesn't work, so I plan to strap a gallon can in the hull just in case. My fuel switch does work so I will have a bit of gas in reserve.

Safety first!

Dude,
I am sure Brock would do things different the next time he goes out, and you do not need to judge or call anyone an idiot. Actually it is a very poor reflection on yourself. I am thankful for those who post their mishaps or close calls so the rest of us can learn from them and make sure the same does not happen to us. Glad it all worked out and thanks for sharing your unfortunate experience.

We've all done dumb things, a couple of years ago I was out alone, my hat blew off, I pulled up next to it and it was sinking, I missed grabbing it. It was my favorite hat, without noticing I jumped in after it, I didn't kill the motor and apparently forgot to clip the lanyard to myself.

Anyway after some swimming and fortunately the steering was cocked slightly to the left I finally caught up with the ski or maybe it caught up with me, I managed to kill the motor and get back on the ski, thinking nobody saw what happened. I looked over to the shore and saw some guys I knew laughing there asses off. I later asked them why they didn't come help, the told me they were having too much fun watching.

I was never in any real danger but it sure was embarrassing.

3 lessons to learn
ride buddy, WHISTLE (required here in FL), and Ride buddy, cell phone and or/radio.
also.. very important !!!!
post a ride plan with somebody that knows where you launched, when you launched, and when you expect to return. this is the person you count on to find you some fkn help when you don't contact them !

and honestly I hate to say this, but the guy that called you an idiot is right, i have no problem agreeing with him, the only thing he didn't do is say it with a smile. :) because now that we know your safe, we can politely yell at you... really, I'm just glad your OK because sometimes things don't always turn out so nice when this chit happens...
quick story.... (my best and worst ride ever)

I did a solo ride in similar conditions about 3 years ago on my Yamaha, I did about 45 miles in terrible conditions (massive seas, driving rain, near zero visibility, shark filled salt water, heavy currents, 20mph wind, inexperienced rider (me) nobody knew that I decided to take a ride that day, and I saw a total of 2 boats on the waer during my entire ride (normal day i'd see 60), anyway's I rode through a fantastically exhilarating ride over a 3 hour stretch, I returned to the ramp with no problems and a HUGE grin on my face. put the ski on the trailer, still smiling....
and then...
I told my wife how great of a ride I had,
now... my wife,
who loves me dearly,
called me an Idiot about 7 times (and some choice other words) when she found out what I did . We don't want to read about a rider dying on the water any more than my sweetie wanted to attend my funeral because I make stupid man mistakes while carrying out my desire to hit some big water, and feed my addiction to the water.

You should always have a whistle, you should watch fuel carefully, very carefully and head back when you know U have 3 gallons or less to spare, i'm always topping off my fuel tank when there is the slightest doubt. I ride with a ride buddy about 95% of the time, actually i've probably only done 4 solo rides in the past 2 years. (this includes having to hound and badger friends to make them go out on the water with me, multiple phone calls, texts, and insulting their manhood as well) do NOT ride alone unless there is no alternative. Duly noted I have no problems with riding alone if its daytime and there is plenty (and I mean plenty) of boat traffic, I honestly don't consider riding by yourself on a busy waterway a solo ride. Certainly not to the degree where you described it where either the conditions or the location mean there is minimal boat traffic.

so after my wife called me an idiot.... she gave me an ultimatum, either sell your ski or promise me you'll ALWAYS let me know when and where your riding, and if your phone dies.. borrow one !!!

I am now extremely anal about posting my ride plan to my wife, or when she's out of town, my brother. I text my wife generally within minutes before I launch my ski,
I post the ramp i'm launching from the direction i'm heading, and my expected return time, ( I always add an hour just in case i get thirsty :) )
I my return time is 2pm for example, i'm getting a txt from here at about 2:15 if she hasn't received on from me saying "Off water" and my guess is that about 4pm she will have called and txted me 6 times, AND called my ride buddy and his cell... at least twice, and by 5pm she's calling my bro in law (an ex coastie for advice) by 6, they've probably decided that something happened and will probably call the coasties, and can read my txt saying where I left, when I left, the direction I was heading, and knows i have a yellow ski and a red vest.

This is serious stuff guys ! heading out alone in 4+ seas in any kind of remote area is a bad idea, especially on a 16 yr old ski.

Great story tho, it creates great memories, and life lessons as well.

YUP IM OK!!!! I ended up goin again last night and when i got to the DNR boat launch i starter thinking about the last experience and about what you guys said.....SO to fix the riding alone issue i recruited the young boy that was working as the grounds keeper at the launch to come ride with me.... It just so happends that he had a spare pair of shorts in his truck so off we went...I dont even know his name but he seemed like a good kid..besides i told him that if he abused my ski in any way that he would not be returing to work the next day...it would be a search and rescue for his body...he agreed and off we went he had a blast and so did i...I wrode the XP and he wrode the GSX....funny story but the GSX didnt have any gas in it so he used the DNR's gas from out of their shed for the ;lawnmower he uses..LOL i was laughing so freakin hard ....then when we got back he starter smiling and said ....I JUST GOT PAID TO DO THAT ..he never clocked out...oh well not my problem its his ...thanks for askin if i was ok guys..you are all the best

Brock, we just made this the featured post of the week for the facebook page! Just a reminder for everyone to check their tank and reserve tanks!

And for those of you that have fuel gages that don't work here is a good reason to get it fixed. I just did mine, parts cost $12 and took a couple of hours to do. Also fix those feul valves rather than by passing them.

Up here we are required to pack safety equipment and they do check. The fines are pretty steep if you get caught without.

i have sice ordered a new selector valve and a fuel float so this will never happen again.... well worth the $$$$
